[Entrevistas às O'G3NE]: "Estamos a tentar dar a todos um pouco de força"

As O'G3NE são um trio holandês constituído pelas irmãs Lisa, Amy e Shelley. Em 2007 representaram a Holanda no Junior Eurovision Song Contest onde alcançaram o 11.º lugar entre 17 concorrentes. Em 2014 participaram e venceram a 5.ª temporada do The Voice e tornaram-se no primeiro tio a vencer o programa. O seu último álbum, lançado em 2016, chegou ao topo de vendas na Holanda e foram selecionadas internamente para representar o seu país este ano.

Porque é que é importante para vocês participar na Eurovisão?

O'G3NE: Sempre fomos fãs da Eurovisão e nos sentámos juntos no sofá enquanto família a ver o concurso. Por isso quando tens a oportunidade de fazer parte da Eurovisão, tens de a aproveitar! Achamos que é fantástico que, nas nossas idades - 22 e 21 anos - tenhamos a oportunidade de representar o nosso país num palco tão grande.

Quais são as vossas expetativas para o concurso e para a vossa estadia em Kiev?

O'G3NE: Estamos à espera que seja uma experiência agitada mas fantástica. Nunca estivemos na Ucrânia, por isso estamos muito entusiasmadas! Vamos fazer tudo o que pudermos para que a Holanda tenha orgulho em nós e para trazer o título para casa. Também queremos pôr um sorriso de reconhecimento na cara da nossa mãe. É um reconhecimento por tudo o que ela fez por nós e que ainda significa para nós. Estamos muito entusiasmadas em relação a isso tudo!

Sobre o que é que é a vossa canção "Lights and Shadows"?

O'G3NE: Vida familiar para nós e muitas outras pessoas que foi interrompida por causa de um doença. A maioria das pessoas provavelmente já sabe que a nossa mãe sofre de uma doença grave há alguns anos. Isso tem um grande impacto na nossa família. Apoiamo-nos uns aos outros durante os momentos bons e maus mas há alguma tristeza que se mantém. A nossa carreira e as histórias que temos para contar agora trazem momentos de felicidade à nossa mãe. Em "Light and Shadows" falamos sobre o quão instável é a vida de um doente e da sua família que luta por esperança e positivismo. Acima de tudo tentamos dar força às pessoas nesta situação.

O que é que querem passar com a vossa canção?

O'G3NE: É uma canção de esperança que foi feita para dar força a quem está doente e às suas famílias. É um poema para a nossa mãe e um grito que encorajamento para todos cuja situação familiar está a ser interrompida pela doença. Tens de lutar com positivismo e esperança, aproveitar os momentos especiais. Estamos a tentar dar a todos um pouco de força.

O que é que nos podem dizer sobre a vossa atuação?

O'G3NE: Logo depois de escolhermos a música começamos a construir uma equipa à nossa volta. Não queríamos mesmo deixar nada ao acaso. Agora temos uma excelente equipa de diretores e criativos em cada aspeto. A "fase um" foi o lançamento da música e vídeo mas agora estamos ocupadas a levar as coisas para outro nível para Kiev. A "fase um" foi um aperitivo. O resto terão de esperar par ver...

O que é que quer dizer O'G3NE?

O'G3NE: O "O" é o grupo sanguíneo da nossa mãe. O "Gene" é pelos genes que partilhamos. E, claro, o "3" é porque somos três!

Quais foram os melhores momentos da vossa carreira?

O'G3NE: Apesar das nossas idades, este ano completamos 10 anos de carreira juntas enquanto artistas. Ao longo deste tempo houve vários momentos que guardamos com carinho. Em 2014 fomos o primeiro grupo a vencer o The Voice e foi aí que as O'G3NE se formaram. Ganhámos realmente fama em 2016 através do programa "Beste Zangers". Todas as semanas podíamos demonstrar quem são realmente as O'G3NE: três irmãs a cantar em harmonia. O período de preparação para a Eurovisão também tem sido muito especial e algo que nunca experienciámos antes.

Vocês participaram no Junior Eurovision Song Contest. Como é que essa experiência vos pode ajudar em Kiev?

O'G3NE: Fazer parte do Junior Song Contest há dez anos enquanto Lisa, Amy e Shelley foi impressionante e é algo que guardamos com muito carinho até aos dias de hoje. Para três meninas tudo parecia ainda maior e mais espetacular. Se isso nos vai ajudar em Kiev, não sabemos mas cada experiência nos torna mais fortes.

O'G3NE: Waterloo dos ABBA, Fairytale do Alexander Rybak, What's Another Year do Johnny Logan, Rise Like a Phoenix da Conchita Wurst.

O'G3NE are a dutch trio made by the sisters Lisa, Amy and Shelley. In 2007 they represented The Netherlands in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest where they conquered a 11th place amongst 17 contestants. In 2014 they won the 5th season of The Voice and became the first trio to win the program. Their last album, released in 2016, made it to the first place in the dutch charts and later they were announced as the dutch representatives for Eurovision 2017. 

Why is it important for you to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest?

O'G3NE: We have always been Eurovision fans and sit on the sofa together as a family to watch it every year. So when you get the chance to take part yourself you've just got to grab it! We think it's fantastic that, at our ages - 22 and21 years old - we get the opportunity to represent our country on such a big stage.

What are your expectations of the contest and staying in Kiev?

O'G3NE: We are expecting a hectic but amazing experience. We've never been to Ukraine so we're very excited to be heading there! We're going to do everything we can to make The Netherlands proud of us and to bring the title back home. We also want to put a smile of recognition on our mother's face. It's an acknowledgement, a kind of recognition, for all she has done for us and what she still means to us. We're so excited about it all!

What is your song "Lights and Shadows" about?

O'G3NE: Home life for us and for many other people whose family situation has been disrupted by illness. Many people probably already know that our mother has been suffering from a serious illness for several years now. It's has a big impact on our family. We support each other through thick and thin but some sadness still remains. Our breakthrough and the stories we now have to tell bring moments of happiness for Mum. In "Light and Shadows" we sing about how unstable life is for a patient as well as his or her family of fighting with positivity and hope. Above all we try to give strenght to people in this kind of situation.

What do you want to get across through your song? 

O'G3NE: It is a song of hope that's meant to give strenght to people who are ill - and their families. It is a poem to our mother and a shout of encouragement to everyone whose family situation is being disrupted by sickness. You've got to fight the fight with positivity and hope, enjoying special moments and appreciating each other. We're trying to give everyone a bit of strenght to get them through.

What can you tell us about your act?

O'G3NE: Straight after the song was chosen, we set about building a team around us. We really wanted to leave nothing to chance. We've now got an excellent team of managers, directors and creative specialists from every field. "Phase One" saw the launch of the song and the video but we're now busy stepping things up to a whole new level for Kiev. Phase One was a taster. For the rest, you'll just have to wait and see...

What does O'G3NE stand for?

O'G3NE: The "O" is our mother's blood group. "Gene" is for the genes we share. And, of course, "3" is because there are three of us!

What have been the best moments from your career?

O'G3NE: In spite of our young ages, this year we'll be celebrating 10 years together as artists. Throughout this time there have been many moments we cherish. In 2014 we were the first group to become winner of The Voice and that's when O'G3NE came into being. We got our real breakthrough in 2016 through the "Beste Zangers" TV programme. Every week we could demonstrate what O'G3NE really stood for: three sisters singing in harmony. The period in the run-up to the Song Contest has also been extremely special and something we've not experienced before.

You took part in the Junior Song Contest. How will this experience help you Kiev?

O'G3NE: Taking part in the Junior Song Contest ten years ago as Lisa, Amy and Shelley made a big impression on us and it's something that we still cherish to this day. For three small girls, everything just seemed even bigger and more amazing. Whether it will help us in Kiev or not, we just don't know but every experience makes you stronger.
