[Entrevista] Martina Bárta: "Sinto que a responsabilidade me motiva imenso"

Como é que te descreves?

Martina Bárta (MB): Otimista, às vezes demasiado louca e distraída. Amante da vida, da minha família, amigos e da música. Frequentemente irritadiça e impaciente

És uma cantora jazz com um grande talento. Como é que sentes a tua participação num concourso com músicas perdominantemente pop? 

MB: Para mim, participar na Eurovisão é um grande desafio. O maior projeto musical em que alguma vez participei. Não encaro o facto de o meu foco principal ser o jazz como uma desvantagem.

A tua vida profissional é entre Praga e Berlim. Onde é que te sentes realmente em casa?

MB: Simplesmente tenho duas casas. Amo Praga e Berlim. As duas cidades são completamente diferentes e cada uma tem a sua energia muito inspiracional para mim.

O que te chamou a atenção na canção "My Turn"?

MB: "My Turn" é uma música com uma história particular. Tem uma alma. Não é exactamente algo típica, mas isso torna-a mais forte.

Então, qual é a história?

MB: Cada um de nós deve estar preparado para oferecer um ombro amigo. Em qualquer momento, em qualquer lugar a toda a gente. Devemos apreciar as pessoas que amamos e as pessoas que nos rodeiam. Nunca sabemos quando é que vamos precisar de ajuda.

Estás ansiosa por participar no concurso?

MB: Estou muito ansiosa para participar na Eurovisão. Estou a preparar-me intensivamente. Tenho aulas de canto regularmente, trabalho a minha aparência e o meu bem estar psicológico que também é importante. Estou muito orgulhosa por ter a oportunidade de representar a República Checa.

Os resultados da República Checa têm melhorado todos os anos. Que efeito é que estas expetativas têm em ti e qual é o teu objetivo pessoal?

MB: Sinto que a responsabilidade me motiva imenso. Além disso eu não estou sozinha nisto, há uma equipa inteira a apoiar-me. Claro, ficaria extremamente feliz se conseguisse chegar à final e alcançar o melhor resultado possível. Acho que temos algo para oferecer e estamos a fazer o máximo para nos prepararmos para isso.

Tendo em conta o tipo de música, o sucesso dependerá muito da qualidade vocal. Como é que te estás a preparar?

MB: Tenho aulas de canto regulares com a Hana Pecková que é a melhor professora de canto na República Checa para mim. Ela sabe muito bem como trabalhar com os seus alunos de maneira a que eles não tenham medo de participar neste tipo de concursos. “Si canta come si parla,” ou “canta da mesma forma que falas". Ela relembra-me disto muitas vezes e está certa. Cantar deve sair naturalmente da tua alma.

Um evento desta envergadura com grande interesse de jornalistas e fãs é um novo desafio para ti. Como é que te sentes neste papel?

MB: A primeira semana depois da minha nomeação foi muito agitada. Por sorte, tenho excelentes pessoas à minha volta que estão felizes em ajudar-me sempre que preciso. Não estou sozinha e isso acalma-me. Ao mesmo tempo, isso confirma a importância da mensagem da música "My Turn".

De que músicas dos outros países é que gostas?

MB: Gosto do cantor australiano. Principalmente da sua aparência.

Este ano a Eurovisão vai ser sediada em Kiev. Estás ansiosa por estar nessa cidade?

MB: Nunca estive na Ucrânica, mas ouvi dizer que Kiev é uma cidade bonita. Vou difinitivamente visitar um bom clube de jazz e gostava de conhecer a cultura tradicional ucraniana. Gosto de muito de viajar e estou muito ansiosa para esta estadia em Kiev com a delegação checa e de outros países e todos os eurofãs.

Martina Bárta is a jazz musician who is divides her life between Berlin and Prague. She was part of the band 4 To The Bar and is best known by in her home country by her role in the musical Robin Hood.

How would you describe yourself? 

Martina Bárta (MB): Optimistic, sometimes too crazy and absentminded. Loving life, my family, friends and music. Often unnecessarily choleric and impatient.

You are a jazz singer with a great talent. How do you perceive your participation in a contest of perdominantly pop songs?

MB: For me, participation in the Eurovision is a huge challenge. The biggest music project I have ever participated in. I don´t take the fact that my main focus was mainly on jazz music in the past as a disadvantage.

Your professional life is a straddled between Prague and Berlin. Where do you actually feel at home?

MB: I simply have two homes. I love Prague and Berlin. Both cities are completely di erent and each of them has its own, for me very inspirational, energy.

What was it about the song "My Turn" appealed to you?

MB: My turn is a song with a particular story. It has a soul. It is not exactly typical, but that makes it stronger.

So, what is the story?

MB: Every one of us should be ready to offer a helping hand. Anytime, anywhere and to anyone. We should appreciate our loved ones and the people we are surrounded by. You never know when you are going to need help yourself.

Are you looking foward to participating in the contest?

MB: I very much look forward to participating in the Eurovision. I am preparing intensively. I regularly attend vocal lessons, I work on my physical appearance, and psychological well-being is important as well. I am very proud that I will get to represent the Czech Republic.

The results of the Czech Republic get better every year. What effect do these expectations have on you and what is your personal goal?

MB: I feel the responsibility motivates me enormously. Plus I am not alone in this, a whole team of people supports me. Of course, I will be extremely happy if we manage to get to the finals and to achieve the best place possible. I think we do have something to o ffer and we are doing maximum to prepare for it.

Considering the type of the song, success largely depends on the quality of the singing. How are you preparing?

MB: I regularly attend singing lessons of Hana Pecková who is the best vocal trainer in the Czech Republic for me. She knows very well how to work with her students in order for them not to be afraid of participation in this type of contest. “Si canta come si parla,” or “sing the same way as you talk.” She often reminds me that, and she is right. Singing should come naturally out of your soul.

An event of this size with huge interest of journalists and fans is a new challenge for you. How do you feel in this role?

MB: The first week after my nomination was really hectic. Luckily, I have great people around me who are happy to help me in case I need it. I am not alone in this and that calms me down. And at the same time, it confirms the importance of the message of the song My Turn.

Which songs of the other countries do you like?

MB: I like the Australian singer. Mainly his appearance.

This year the Eurovision will be held in the Ukrainian city of Kyiv. Are you looking foward to this city?

MB: I have never been to Ukraine, but I have heard Kyiv is a nice city. I will definitely visit a nice jazz club, and I would like to get to know the traditional Ukrainian culture. I like travelling, in general, very much and I´m really looking forward to the stay in Kyiv with the Czech crew, delegations from other countries and all the fans of Eurovision.

[Entrevista a Svala]: "a minha performance será muito diferente daquela que eu fiz na Islândia"

Svala irá representar a Islândia no Festival Eurovisão da Canção 2017 mas canta desde os sete anos de idade. Não só é cantora como compositora, já foi jurada no The Voice, criou uma linha de roupa e foi em tournée pelo mundo.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): Fala-nos um pouco sobre ti. O que é que te inspira enquanto artista?

Svala: O meu nome é Svala Karitas Björgvinsdóttir e sou uma cantora e compositora islandesa. Comecei a gravar músicas aos sete anos de idade. Já lancei imensas canções de sucesso e frequentei três bandas ao longo da minha carreira. Conquistei o primeiro número um quando tinha apenas 11 anos, sendo que o segundo single número um foi atingido aos 16 anos. Aos 20, assinei contrato com a EMI, na América, um dos maiores contratos discográficos assinado por um artista islandês na América. O meu primeiro single americano, co-escrito por mim, foi lançado em 2001 e tornou-se bastante popular na América, tendo mesmo estado no Top30 do Billboard Charts. Já lancei dois álbuns a solo e três álbuns com a minha banda Steed Lord, que foi formada em 2006 e teve algum sucesso internacionalmente. Estivemos no ativo durante 10 anos, e chegámos mesmo a fazer uma tour pelo mundo, a desenvolver uma linha de roupa para a H&M, participámos em anúncios de tv e em filmes. Mudei-me para Los Angeles em 2009, onde vivi durante 8 anos com o meu marido, que é também produtor e compositor. Tenho a minha própria marca de roupa, chamada KALI, que é vendida online. No ano passado, formei a minha nova banda, Blissful, e o nosso single "Elevate" resultou muito bem no Spotify. Também fui jurada no The Voice da Islândia em 2015. Adoro gatos,  ficção científica e filmes. 

A minha inspiração provém da minha vida, dos meus sonhos, dos meus amigos e da minha família. De tudo o que me rodeia, basicamente.

CE: Como é que a música entrou na tua vida? 

Svala: O meu pai é um artista  muito famoso na Islândia e a sua música é um tesouro nacional. Eu nasci na indústria da música na Islândia, por assim dizer. Ele nunca quis que eu entrasse nessa indústria. Eu tive que implorar para que ele me deixasse gravar música pela primeira vez, quando eu tinha 7 anos de idade. Eu tive a oportunidade de fazê-lo novamente aos 9 anos, num dueto com ele e, em seguida, tive meu primeiro single número um, quando tinha 11 anos. Depois disso, os meus pais quiseram que eu me concentrasse na minha educação, e em ser apenas uma criança e desfrutar da minha infância. O meu pai disse-me que se eu quisesse realmente ser uma cantora, que deveria fazê-lo sozinha, quando fosse mais velha, e não usar a sua fama e contactos para me tornar numa artista bem sucedida. Foi o melhor conselho que eu alguma vez tive, porque foi algo me tornou muito independente enquanto compositora e cantora. E eis que comecei a fazer minha própria música quando eu tinha 15 anos e nunca mais parei desde então. Nunca me entregaram nada do que eu tenho numa bandeja de prata, porque os meus pais sempre quiseram que eu e o meu irmão realmente trabalhássemos no duro para termos o que queríamos na vida. Mas eles apoiam-me imenso e dão sempre os melhores conselhos.

CE: Como começou a tua aventura pela Eurovisão?

Svala: Eu e o meu marido, Einar, escrevemos a música juntamente com Lester Mendez e Lily Elise em Los Angeles, onde vivemos, em 2016. A canção não foi originalmente escrita para a Eurovisão. Estivemos em várias "sessões de escrita" nos últimos dois anos, porque estamos a escrever para a nossa nova banda, Blissful, e para outros artistas em Los Angeles. E "Paper" nasceu daquelas sessões de escrita. Na verdade, de apresentar a canção na seleção nacional na Islândia foi do meu marido, não minha. Soubemos no momento que essa música era muito épica e grande. Demorei alguns dias a ficar convencida, mas lá decidi fazê-lo porque a mensagem da minha canção é tão importante e eu no fundo sabia que ela provavelmente resultaria muito bem no festival islandês. Para além disso, eu só participaria na Eurovisão seguindo os meus próprios termos e com uma música co-escrita por mim e apoiasse completamente. "Paper" é uma canção tão pessoal e estou muito orgulhosa disso. Simplesmente parece certo participar na Eurovisão com uma música em que eu acredito tão fortemente.

CE: Como te sentiste quando percebeste que ias à Eurovisão?

Svala: Foi uma sensação muito incrível. Especialmente porque foi uma vitória que quebrou recordes na Islândia, eu venci com uma maioria de votos esmagadora. Tive 124 mil votos e a Islândia tem apenas 320 mil habitantes. Eu senti-me muito grata e muito emocionada por tantas pessoas me apoiarem, a mim e à minha música, e me escolherem para competir em nome da Islândia.

CE: Costumas seguir a Eurovisão? Qual é o teu tema eurovisivo favorito de sempre?

Svala: Tenho de ser muito honesta. Eu vivo em Los Angeles há 8 anos e eles só começaram a transmitir a Eurovisão na televisão de cá no ano passado. Então eu não assisti ao festival desde 2008 até ao ano passado. Mas sempre tentei manter-me atualizada, indo no Youtube para ver a música vencedora. Lembro-me de ver "Euphoria" no Youtube depois de ter ganho e de ter pensado "uau, esta é a melhor canção alguma vez escrita da Eurovisão". É a minha favorita de todos os tempos.

CE: Alguma vez tinhas sonhado em fazer parte do Festival Eurovisão da Canção?

Svala: Não, sinceramente, não. Eu nunca pensei que iria fazer parte da Eurovisão enquanto performer e compositora. Na verdade, eu participei, apenas como compositora, na seleção nacional na Islândia em 2008 e foi divertido, mas nunca fez parte dos meus planos participar na Eurovisão como ambos . Mas nunca digas nunca. Estou aqui, estou a competir e estou muito entusiasmada e honrada por fazer parte disto.

CE: Como descreverias a tua canção para a Eurovisão?

Svala: Escrevi a minha canção, "Paper", sobre uma experiência muito pessoal. Fala sobre lidar com as dificuldades que aparecem na tua vida, ultrapassado-as. Sempre fui muito aberta aos media na Islândia acerca de ter lidado muito com ansiedade durante os meus anos de adolescência, até aos vinte e poucos anos. A música sempre foi a minha salvação e o meu lugar seguro, e eu quis escrever algo sobre aquilo pelo qual eu passei quando lidei com essas dificuldades. Nós todos já tivemos de lidar com algo nas nossas vidas. Ninguém tem uma vida perfeita. É isso que nos conecta enquanto seres humanos. A palavra "papel" na minha canção é uma metáfora para as emoções. Quando escrevi a letra, quis descrever a relação que tinha comigo mesma enquanto tive de lidar com a ansiedade. A minha ansiedade fez-me sentir frágil e vulnerável, como o papel. O propósito de escrever a minha canção foi ser honesta sobre mim mesma e não ter vergonha de ter de lidar com isto. Porque quando nós temos esta abertura, quando falamos sobre nós, é como se nos soltássemos em liberdade. Ao perdermos a vergonha, tornamo-nos capazes de encarar os nossos medos e de não desistir. Eu ainda tenho os meus dias maus mas felizmente agora estou num lugar muito melhor e a ansiedade já não controla a minha vida. Mas é tão importante para mim falar sobre isso e sentir-me capaz de ajudar e inspirar outras pessoas. Espero que a minha canção faça isso pelas pessoas de todo mundo que passam por dificuldades na vida.

CE: Quais são os pontos mais fortes da tua canção, que farão com que ela se destaque?

Svala: É uma canção poderosa mas muito honesta, com uma letra muito universal, com a qual toda a gente se pode relacionar. Todos nós já tivemos de ultrapassar dificuldades na nossa vida.

CE: Podemos esperar alguma surpresa para a tua atuação?

Svala: A minha performance será muito diferente daquela que eu fiz na Islândia. Contudo, é surpresa, portanto não te posso contar mais detalhes. Estou muito entusiasmada com ela e espero que vocês a amem tanto como eu.

CE: Como te sentes acerca da semifinal em que o teu país ficou posicionado?

Svala: Eu acho que a semifinal é ótima. Tudo está como deveria estar. Eu não posso controlar nada. Eu sou como uma folha no vento, e vou para onde ele me leva. É como eu vivo a minha vida, sempre positiva e de mente aberta. 

CE: Quais são as tuas expectativas para a participação na Eurovisão?

Svala: Para dar a conhecer a minha voz e a minha música a um público cada vez maior. Para conhecer novas pessoas e fazer grandes memórias. É tudo o que se quer da vida, não é?

CE: Quais são as tuas canções favoritas deste ano?

Svala: A minha, claro hehehehe. A minha canção é a de que eu gosto mais, como provavelmente todos os outros concorrentes diriam. Também gosto muito da canção da Letónia e de Portugal.

CE: Qual é a tua opinião acerca da participação de Portugal na Eurovião, incluíndo o participante deste ano, Salvador Sobral?

Svala: Eu adoro a sua canção, a voz dele e a sua performance. Uma das minhas favoritas.

CE: Tens algum projeto em mente para breve?

Svala: Sim! Vou lançar muita música nova com a minha banda Blissful e estamos a produzir alguns videoclips para a nossa música. Estou também a trabalhar em alguns projetos secretos, que revelarei mais tarde.

Svala will represent Iceland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 but sings since she was seven. She is also a songwriter, she's been part of the judges on The Voice, created a clothing line and toured the world.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): Tell us a little about yourself. How do you find inspiration as an artist?

Svala: My name is Svala Karitas Björgvinsdóttir and I´m an icelandic singer and songwriter.  I started recording music when I was 7 years old.  I´ve released countless hit singles and been in three bands throughout my career.  I had my first number one single when I was 11 years old and then my second number one single when I was 16 years old in Iceland.  When I was 20 years old I was signed by EMI in America and signed one of the biggest record contract ever made with an icelandic artist.  My first american single which I co-wrote came out in 2001 and became quite popular in America and was on the top 30 Billboard Charts over there.  I´ve released 2 solo albums and 3 albums with my band Steed Lord.  I formed my band Steed Lord in 2006 and we had quite the success worldwide.  The band was together for 10 awesome years.  We toured all over the world, designed a clothing line for H&M, had our music in a lot of american tv shows, commercials and a couple of movies.  I moved to Los Angeles in 2009 and I´ve lived there for 8 years with my husband who is a songwriter, producer and director.  I have my own clothing line called KALI which is sold online.  Last year I formed my new band Blissful and our single "Elevate" came out and did really well on Spotify.  I became a judge on famous tv show The Voice in Iceland in 2015.  I adore cats and science fiction books and movies.

My inspiriation comes from my life, my dreams, my friends and family.  Everything around me basically.  

CE: How did your musical career began? 

Svala: My dad is a very famous recording artist in Iceland and his music is a national treasure.  I was born into the music industry in Iceland so to speak.  My dad never wanted me to go into music.  I had to beg him to record music for the first time when I was 7 years old.  I got the chance to do i again in a duet with him when I was 9 years old and then had my first number one hit when I was 11 years old.  After that my parents wanted to me focus on my education and just be a kid and enjoy my childhood.  My dad told me if I wanted to be a recording artist I should do it on my own terms when I was older and not use his fame and connections to become successful.  It´s the best advice I´ve ever gotten cause it made me very independant as a songwriter and singer.  And I started making my own music when I was 15 and haven´t stopped since.  I´ve never gotten anything handed to me on a silver platter cause my parents always wanted me and my brother to really work hard for everything we wanted in life.  But they are very supportive and always give the best advice.

CE: How did your Eurovision adventure started?

Svala: Me and my husband Einar wrote the song together with Lester Mendez and Lily Elise in LA where we live in 2016.  The song was not written for Eurovision originally.  We have been in many writing sessions for the last two years cause we have been writing for our new band Blissful and other artists in LA.  And "Paper" came out of those writing sessions.   It was actually my husbands idea and not mine to submit it to the national selection in Iceland.  We knew right away that this song was very epic and big.  It took me a couple of days to be convinced but then I decided to do it cause the message is so important in my song and I knew that it would probably do pretty well in the national selection.  Also I only wanted to compete in Eurovision if it was on my own terms and with a song that I co-wrote and could stand behind completely.  And "Paper" is such a personal song and I´m very proud of it.  And it feels right to compete with a song that I believe in so strongly.

CE: How did you feel when you knew you would go to Eurovision?

Svala: It was a very humbling and an amazing feeling.  Especially cause it was a record breaking win in Iceland and I won with an overwhelming majority of the votes.  I got 124 thousand votes and there are only 320 thousand people that live in Iceland.  I was very thankful and very thouched that so many people supported me and my song and picked me to compete on Icelands behalf.  

CE: Do you often follow Eurovision? What’s your favorite Eurovision theme of all time?

Svala: I have to be very honest, I´ve lived in LA for 8 years now and they only started showing Eurovision on tv here last year.  So I didn´t watch it until last year since 2008.  But I always tried to keep up by going on youtube to see the winning song so I wouldn´t be out of the loop too much.  And I remember seeing Euphoria on youtube after it won and thinking "wow that is the best Eurovision song ever written".  It´s my all time favourite.

CE: Have you ever dreamed of being part of the Eurovision Song Contest?

Svala: No not really.  I never thought I would compete in Eurovision as a performer and songwriter.  I actually competed only as a songwriter in the national selection in Iceland in 2008 and that was fun.  But it was never my plan to compete in Eurovision as both.  But never say never.  I´m here and I´m competing and I´m very excited and honoured to be a part of it.

CE: How would you describe your Eurovision song?

Svala: I wrote my song “Paper” about a very personal experience.  It´s about dealing with difficulties in your life but overcoming them.  I´ve been very open in the media in Iceland that I dealt with a lot of  anxiety throughout my teenage years and early twenties. Music has always been my salvation and my safe place and I wanted to write about what I went through when I dealt with those difficulties.  We all deal with something in life.  No one has a perfect life.  This is what connects us as human beings.  The word paper in my song is a metaphor for emotions.  When I wrote the lyrics I wanted to describe the relationship I have with myself while dealing with anxiety.  My anxiety makes me feel fragile and makes me feel vulnerable like paper.  The purpose of me writing my song is to be open and honest about myself and not be ashamed about dealing with this.  Because when we are open and when we talk to each other, we are setting ourselves free.  By not being ashamed we are facing our fears and we are not giving up. I still have my bad days but thankfully I´m at a much better place now and anxiety doesn´t control my life anymore.  But it´s so important to me to talk about it to be able to help others and inspire.  Hopefully my song does that for people around the world that deal with difficulties in life.

CE: What would be the strong points that are going to highlight your theme song?

Svala: It´s a powerful and very honest song with lyrics that are very universal that everyone can relate to.  We all deal with difficulties in our life at times.  

CE: Can we expect any surprises from your performance?

Svala: My performance is different from the one I did in Iceland.  It´s a surprise though so I can´t tell you all the details.  I´m very excited about it and I hope you´ll love it as much as I do.

CE: How do you feel about the semifinal in which your country was placed?

Svala: I think it´s great.  Everything is as it´s suppose to be.  I can´t control it.  I´m like a leaf in the wind.  I go where the wind takes me.  That´s how I live my life.  Open minded and positive.

CE: What are your expectations for the participation on Eurovision?

Svala: To introduce my voice and my music to a bigger and wider audience.  To get to know new people and make great memories.  That´s what life is all about isn´t it?

CE: What are your favorite songs this year?

Svala: Mine of course hehehehe.  I love my song the most like probably every contestant would say.  I really like the song from Latvia as well and Portugal.

CE: What is your opinion about Portugal in the Eurovision, including this year's participant, Salvador Sobral? 

Svala: I love his song and his voice and his performance.  One of my favs.

CE: Do you have future projects coming?

Svala: Yes I´m releasing a lot of new music with my band Blissful and we are directing a bunch of new music videos ourselves for our music.  Also working on some secret projects as well.  Revealed later.

[Entrevista a Claudia Faniello]: "é uma canção emocional que te deixa sem fôlego"

Apaixonada pela música desde pequena, Claudia Faniello, de origem maltesa e italiana, iniciou a sua jornada no Malta Song for Europe em 2006. Participou no concurso por 11 vezes, sendo que em 2017 finalmente tem a possibilidade de representar Malta na Eurovisão.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): Fala-nos um pouco sobre ti. O que é que te inspira enquanto artista?

Claudia Faniello (CF): As minhas experiências de vida e as pessoas que me rodeiam são uma inspiração constante.

CE: Como é que a música entrou na tua vida? 

CF: Eu faço parte de uma família de músicos, é algo que me acompanha desde que era uma criança.

CE:Como começou a tua jornada pela Eurovisão?

CF: Eu participei na seleção nacional de Malta em 2006, seguindo os passos do meu irmão, que representou Malta tanto em 2001 como em 2006.

CE: Como te sentiste quando percebeste que ias à Eurovisão depois de tentares tantas vezes?

CF: Em descrença e cheia de alegria. 

CE: De todas as tuas candidaturas ao Malta Song of Europe, "Breathlessly é a tua canção favorita?

CF: É, sem dúvida, a canção que mais reflete a pessoa em quem me tornei.

CE: Para além da canção deste ano, qual das tuas submissões passadas teria uma forte possibilidade de ganhar a Eurovisão?

CF: "Pure". 

CE: Costumas seguir a Eurovisão? Qual é o teu tema eurovisivo favorito de todos os tempos?

CF: "Molitva".

CE: Como descreverias a tua canção para a Eurovisão?

CF: É uma canção emocional que te deixa sem fôlego.

In love with music since she was a little girl, Claudia Faniello, of maltese and italian origin, began her journey in Malta Song for Europe in 2006. She participated in the competition for 11 times, and, in 2017, she finally has a chance to represent Malta in Eurovision.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): Tell us a little about yourself. How do you find inspiration as an artist?

Claudia Faniello (CF): My life experiences and those of the people around me are a constant inspiration.

CE: How did your musical career began? 

CF: I come from a musical family, it was in bred in me since I was a child.

CE: How did your Eurovision adventure started?

CF: I took part in the Maltese national finals in 2006 following my brothers footsteps who represented Malta both in 2001 & 2006.

CE: How did you feel when you knew you would go to Eurovision after trying so many times?

CF: Over joyed and in disbelief.

CE: From all of your submissions to the contest, is “Breathlessly” your personal favorite?

CF: It’s definitely the song that reflects who I have grown to be.

CE: Besides this years participation song, which of your past submissions would stand a strong chance to win the contest?

CF: "Pure". 

CE: Do you often follow Eurovision? What’s your favorite Eurovision theme of all time?

CF: "Molitva".

CE: How would you describe your Eurovision song?

CF: An emotional song that leaves you breathless

CE: Can we expect any surprise from your performance?

CF: It‘s simplicity

CE: How do you feel about the semifinal in which your country was placed?

CF: A positive challenge

CE: Like Portugal, Malta has never won Eurovision. Is there any hope, for our countries, to someday win the whole thing?

CF: We wouldn’t go for it every year if we didn’t hope!

[Entrevista a JOWST & Aleksander]: "a mensagem da canção é o mais importante"

VERSÃO EM PORTUGÊS

JOWST é um promissor produtor de música que promete levar o melhor de si à Eurovisão, juntando-se a Aleksander Walmann para "levarem o momento" ao concurso internacional.

A vossa canção chama-se "Grab the Moment". Qual é a história e como é que ela existiu?

Joakim: Bem, a canção chama-se "Grab the Moment" e tem uma longa história. Eu fiz o instrumental e precisava que alguém fizesse a letra, porque eu não faço isso. Então, falei com o Jonas McDonnell e ele escreveu a letra. Era mais um música do estilo rap/hip hop no início, mas depois disse ao Jonas que eu ia experimentar algo diferente e ele disse: "Claro!". Então começámos a fazer demos e a adicionar, a mudar guitarras, sons de bateria e sintetizadores. Depois veio Setembro e vi uma publicidade que dizia: "Queres fazer parte do Melodi Grand Prix?" e, pensei, "Sim, porque não?" e submeti a demo. Quatro/cinco meses depois um tipo da NRK (emissora nacional norueguesa) telefonou-me e disse me que queria usar esta música para o concurso na Noruega, então falei com o Jonas e ambos concordámos que queriamos encontrar alguém que fizesse está canção, então mandámos a vários managemente e, Aleksander Walmann quis fazê-la. Eu conhecia o Aleksander do The Voice na Noruega em 2012.

Qual é o som de JOWST?

O som de JOWST é do género EDM. Bem, a produção é EDM e a música é uma combinação de pop, hip pop, rock e sould/R&B. Portanto, é tipo uma ótima hibrida de géneros.

Descrevam a vossa canção em três palavras.

Aleksander: Catchy, motivacional e dancável. 

Joakim: Tempo, procura e motivação, porque precisamos de motivação para fazer a procura de como usar o teu tempo. E isso é o que a música é sobre. "Agarra o Momento" e usa o teu tempo para isso.

Como se sentem a representar a Noruega na Eurovisão 2017?

Aleksander: Não consigo descrever o quão orgulhoso estou, porque é como jogar um jogo de futebola para a tua equipa, ou como os jogos olímpicos. E nós amamos música por isso é a maior honra para nós.

A apresentação em palco é um pouco inesperada, especialmente o facto do JOWST estar a usar uma máscara. Podem nos contar um pouco mais sobre a ideia por trás da encenação da final nacional? 

A encenação nacional da nossa representação de "Grab the Moment" será um pouco com o que fizemos na Noruega onde a música e a mensagem da canção é o mais importante. Na Noruega acho que tivemos um dos espetáculos mais "limpos", não tivemos bailarinos nem efeitos especiais. Só foco na música. Então para Kiev, vamos fazer isso mas construir um maior espetáculo à volta disso. E a máscara vai ficar!

Aleksander, há quanto tempo é que cantas? Joakim, há quanto tempo é que produzes?

Aleksander: Eu canto há tanto tempo quanto me lembro, uma das primeiras memórias que tenho de música é o meu avô a tocar guitarra e a minha avó a tocar piano e eles a cantarem músicas gospel e folk, portanto comecei a aprender harmonias quando eu tinha quatro/cinco anos. Eu e a minha família cantamos há tanto tempo quanto me lembro e eu comecei no coro de gospel quando eu era novo mas para além disso só cantava para a minha família e amigos próximos até 2012, quando participei no The Voice 2012 que foi a minha estreia na TV. Estou feliz que "Agarrei o Momento" e comecei a cantar para mais pessoas.

Joakim: Eu produzo música desde 2008 e antes disso só tocava guitarra, mas isso foi quando eu comecei a produzir música no computador e a tocar com vários géneros diferentes. Mas numa maneira profissional só comecei a produzir música à cerca de três anos e na sua maioria, como engenheiro de som. 

O que faz esta canção única no Festival Eurovisão da Canção 2017?

Eu acho que a razão pela qual esta canção é única na Eurovisão é o facto de não ter sido feita para o festival. Quando ouves as outras canções, podes ouvir que é uma música da Eurovisão, mas a nossa nãol é. Mas mesmo assim funciona no concurso, acho.

Cantor favorito do vosso país?

Aleksander: Jarle Bernhoft, se tivesse de escolher um.

Joakim: Aleksander Walmann, sem dúvida!

Cantor favorito internacional?

Aleksander: Ed Sheeran.

Joakim: Charlie Simpson.

Quais são as vossas inspirações quando se trata de fazer música e porquê?

Aleksander: Tem de ser o Ed Sheeran outra vez, porque ele é muito bom a pintar imagens com as letras e ele combina vários géneros diferentes nas canções dele como rap, pop, folk e por aí.

Joakim: Tem de ser tudo o que eu vejo e faço, e tudo o que eu oiço e leio. Como os sentimentos que recebo, é isso que faz a música.

Que palavra vos descreve melhor?

Aleksander: Positivo, numa maneira social ou social, numa maneira positiva.

Joakim: Impaciente.

Se pudessem ser alguém por um dia, quem serias?

Aleksander: Talvez o Bruno Mars? Eu acho que ele tem alguns dias fixes, porque ele é um tipo fixe!

Joakim: Eu escolheria ser um tipo rico e dar tudo às pessoas que mais precisam.

Hobbies favoritos para além da música?

Aleksander: Skating, snowboarding, jogar golf, fazer escalada e jogar futebol quando tenho tempo.

Joakim: Os meus hobbies são passear o meu cão e fazer comida do princípio.

Balada ou música para dançar?

Aleksander: Música para dançar.

Joakim: Balada.

Para além de ganhar a Eurovisão, qual é o vosso maior sonho de momento?

Aleksander: Tocar no Super Bowl, e quero mesmo trabalhar com o Ed Sheeran.

Joakim: Produzir o próximo álbum do Justin Bieber, isso seria divertido!

JOWST is a promising music producer who promises to bring his best to Eurovision, joining Aleksander Walmann to "take the moment" to the international competition.

Your song is called Grab The Moment, what's the story of the song and how did the song come to exist?

Well, the song is called Grab The Moment and has a long history. I made the instrumental and needed someone to make the lyrics for it, because i don`t do that myself. So i got in touch with this guy named Jonas McDonnell and he wrote the lyrics. It was more like a Rap/Hip Hop song in the beginning, but then i told Jonas to try something different and he said: Sure! So we started making demos and adding, and changing guitars, drums and synthezisers. And then come september i saw a facebook ad saying: Do you want to be in the Eurovision (MGP), so i tought "Yeah why not?" and submitted the demo.

4-5 months later this guy from NRK (Norwegian Television who is hosting Eurovision) called me and told me they wanted to use this song for the Eurovision 2017 in Norway, so i talked with Jonas and we both agreed that we should find someone else that would do this song, so the song was sent out to different managing people, and Aleksander Walmann wanted to do it. I knew about Aleksander from being on The Voice in Norway 2012.

What is JOWST’s sound?

JOWST`s sounds kinda like EDM, Well the production is like EDM and the music is more like a combination of Pop, Hip Hop, Rock and Soul/R&B. So it`s like a great hybrid of genres. 

Describe your song in three words

Aleksander: Catchy, Motivational and Danceable.

Joakim: Time, Search and Motivation, because you need motivation to do the search on how to use your time. And that`s what the song is about, Grab The Moment`s and use that time that you get. 

What do you feel about representing Norway in Eurovision 2017?

Aleksander: I can`t describe how proud i am, because it`s like playing a fotball game for your team, or like the olympics. And we love music so its like the greatest honor for us.

Stage presentation is quite unexpected, especially the fact JOWST’s wearing a mask. Can you tell us more about the idea behind the national final staging?

The national staging of our act for Grab The Moment will be based from what we did on stage in Norway where the music and the message in the song is most important, In Norway i think we had one of the "cleanest" shows, we didn`t have dancers or any special effects. Just focus on the music.

So for Kiev, we are gonna do that but build a bigger show around it. And the mask will stay on!

Aleksander: for how long have you been singing,? Joakim: For how long have you been producing?

Aleksander: I have been singing for as long as i remember, one of the first memories i have from music is my grandpa who is playing the guitar and my grandma is playing the piano and they are singing these gospel and folk songs, so i started learning harmonies when i was like 4-5 years old. Me and my family have been singing as long as i can remember and i started in a gospel choir when i was young but other than that only singing to my family and closest friends until 2012 with The Voice that was my TV debute. Im happy i "Grabbed The Moment" and startet singing to more people.

Joakim: I have been producing music since like 2008 and before that i only played guitar, but that`s when i started producing music on the computer and playing with alot of different genres, But in a professional  way i have only produced music for about 3 years, mostly as a sound engineer. 

What makes this song unique in the Eurovision Song Contest?

I think the reason why this song is so unique in the Eurovision Song Contest is the fact that it was not made for the ESC, when you listen to the other ESC songs you can hear that its a "ESC" song, but our song is not. But still it is in the contest so it works i guess.

Favourite singer from your country?

Aleksander: Jarle Bernhoft if i had to choose one.

Joakim: Aleksander Walmann for sure!

Favourite international singer?

Aleksander: Ed Sheeran

Joakim: Charlie Simpson

Who are your inspirations when it comes to making music and why?

Aleksander: It has to be Ed Sheeran again, beacuse he is really good with painting pictures with his lyrics and he combines a lot of different genres into his songs like rap, pop, folk and so on.

Joakim: It has to be everything i see and do, and everything i hear and read. Like feelings i get, that makes me make music

What word describes you best? 

Aleksander: Positive in a social way or social in a positive way.

Joakim: Impatient

If you could be someone else for one day, who would you be? 

Aleksander: Maybe Bruno Mars? I think he has some cool days, because he is a cool guy!

Joakim: I would choose to be a rich guy and give away all my assets to the people that need them the most.

Favourite hobbies besides music?

Aleksander: Skating, snowboarding, golfing, climbing and fotball when i have time.

Joakim: My hobbies are walking my dog, and making food from scratch.

Ballad or dance song?

Aleksander: Dance song.

Joakim: Ballad.

Besides winning Eurovision, what’s your biggest dream at the moment?

Aleksander: Playing at the Super Bowl, and i really want to work with Ed Sheeran.

Joakim: Producing the next album for Justin Bieber, that would be fun!
