[Entrevista] Jessika: "Who We Are é sobre uma experiência pessoal pela qual passei: bullying"

Jessika vai representar São Marino no Festival Eurovisão da Canção em Lisboa com a canção "Who We Are". A cantora aceitou responder a algumas perguntas feitas pelo Crónicas de Eurofestivais, que agora trazemos em exclusivo para si.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): Como começou a sua carreira musical?

Jessika (J):  Comecei a cantar com 6 anos. Quando era mais nova, costumava ficar à frente da televisão a cantar e a dançar. Imitava várias interpretações italianas, nomeadamente a Lorella Cuccharini e Heather Parisi.  A minha família nem podia mudar de canal. Já na escola primária, uma professora aconselhou à minha mãe que seria melhor que eu tivesse aulas de voz para que a minha carreira pudesse progredir. Mais tarde, acabei por ter aulas de piano, de hip hop e outros estilos de dança.

CE: Quais são as suas inspirações musicais?

J: Eu tenho tantas inspirações musicais, mas, para citar as principais, destaco: a Madonna, a Shania Twain, a Christina Aguilera, os Coldplay, a Lady Gaga, a Katy Perry, a Bebe Rexha, etc.

CE: Como é que a sua aventura na Eurovisão começou?

J: Em Malta adoramos a Eurovisão. O concurso nacional é basicamente uma das principais vitrinas que temos para mostrarmos o nosso trabalho, daí que, para muitos artistas, é um sonho lá estar. Também para mim era um sonho e vivia ansiosa para ter 16 anos para poder competir. Na verdade, aos 17 anos competi e fui uma das finalistas em Tangled, 2008. Mais tarde, entre 2011 e 2016 consegui alcançar sempre as finais da seleção maltesa. Nestes últimos dois anos continuei a enviar a minha candidatura, no entanto as mesmas acabaram por não consegui um lugar na final. Portanto, quando surgiu a oportunidade de poder concorrer por São Marino, pensei que seria uma boa opção, e aqui estou eu. 

CE: Qual é a história da música "Who We Are" e como foi criada?

J: “Who We Are” é uma música com uma mensagem positiva que abrange todos os indivíduos. A mensagem é muito na base de que todos devem orgulhar-se de quem são, do que se tornaram e da força que conseguiram ter - mesmo depois daquilo que passaram. É também sobre uma experiência pessoal pela qual passei, que é o bullying. Eu acredito que cada pessoa, de uma forma ou de outra, passou por isso - ora assédio físico, ora assédio mental. No entanto, será que essas mesmas pessoas encontraram a ajuda necessária naqueles precisos momentos? Gostaria que esta música servisse para aumentar a consciência sobre esta problemática. Além do mais, relembrar que não devemos ser espectadores e que temos a obrigação de começar a agir, sempre que virmos qualquer atitude repressora. Também devemos ter cuidado com as palavras, porque as mesmas podem afetar todo o percurso de vida de quem as ouvem. 

Então, e finalizando, a música surgiu quando os compositores e autores me perguntaram se haveria algum tema ou mensagem que eu gostaria de interpretar. Nesse seguimento, decidi abordar algo que me afetou e que, enquanto professora, sei que continua a afectar tantos estudantes. 

CE: O que sente por representar São Marino na Eurovisão 2018?

J: Estou verdadeiramente feliz por representar São Marino, pois os seus cidadãos são muito abertos e generosos. Isso viu-se no facto de terem uma competição que contemplava candidaturas de todo o mundo. São Marino terá sempre um lugar especial no meu coração.

CE: Porquê representar São Marino, depois de tentar várias vezes pela Malta?

J: Como eu disse anteriormente, adoro a Eurovisão e sempre quis fazer parte da mesma. Trata-se de mostrar um pouco daquilo que faço a quem me acompanha e a quem segue a minha carreira. Nos últimos dois anos eu também tentei pela Malta, mas por algum motivo não consegui passar à final. Assim, apareceu a oportunidade de concorrer por São Marino e esta é uma boa forma de eu difundir o meu talento por outros lugares.

CE: Costuma seguir a Eurovisão? O que acha do concurso? Tem músicas favoritas?

J: Sim, eu sigo a Eurovisão todos os anos. Eu amo o certame porque o mesmo consegue juntar muitos países num só palco. A minha grande favorita de todos os tempos é a "Euphoria". A forma como a Loreen a  interpreta, a dança, tudo me emociona. 

CE: Podemos esperar alguma novidade na sua performance?

J: Hehe. Tudo o que posso dizer é que já estou com a minha equipa a preparar novidades. Eu vou dar o meu melhor para que a atuação seja memorável - não apenas para mim, mas para todos os espectadores. 

CE: Este ano a Eurovisão será realizada na Lisboa. O que espera desta cidade?

J: Estou muito ansiosa por chegar a Liaboa. Já estive no Porto e adorei. A cidade e as pessoas são incríveis, e acredito que em Lisboa também seja assim. 

CE: Além de vencer a Eurovisão, qual é o seu maior sonho neste momento?

J: Viajar por todo o mundo!! Principalmente América Latina.

CE: Nomeie cinco das suas coisas preferidas.

J: A minha comida favorita, Lasanha. O meu cão, Shakespeare. O filme, a Pantera Cor-de-rosa rosa. Correr. Dançar. 

CE: E futuros projectos?

J: Atualmente estou focada na Eurovisão e na música em geral.  Quem sabe, mais tarde, possa vir a trabalhar com os mesmos compositores, autores e produtores da minha composição, e desenvolver algum material novo – visto que a dinâmica que criámos é muito boa. 

CE: Quer dizer algo aos nossos leitores e aos fãs portugueses em geral?

J: Muito obrigada a todos pela vossa atenção e apoio. Estou ansiosa por vos ver em Lisboa.

Jessika is going to represent San Marino in the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, with the song "Who We Are". She accepted to answer some questions made by Crónicas de Eurofestivais, and now we bring them as an exclusive to you.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): How did your musical career began?

Jessika (J):  I started singing at the tender age of 6 years. I used to stay in front  of tv singing and dancing to Italian showgirls namely Lorella Cuccharini  and Heather Parisi and didn't let any of my family members change  channel or watch tv. Then a primary school teacher told my mum to take  me to vocal lessons as she believed in my talents and that's where my  career started to progress. Later I took piano lessons and also hip hop  dance lessons.

CE: Who is your musical inspiration?

J: I have so many musical inspirations but to name a few these are the vmajor ones that I grew up listening and still look up to not only as a musical taste but also in lyricwise: Madonna, Shania Twain, Christina  Aguilera, Coldplay, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Bebe Rexha, etc

CE: How did your Eurovision adventure started?

J: In Malta we love Eurovision and it's basically one of the major showcase  we have, so for many artists it's the dream to be there, thus I was  looking forward to be 16 years old and to start competing in the  national finals, in fact at age 17 I was one of the finalists for the  first time with Tangled back in 2008. Later in 2011 till 2016 I was a  finalist each and every year in the finals for the Maltese selection,  these last two years I still was submitting my songs, however they  didn't manage to make it to the finals. Therefore, when the opportunity  of the San marino selection arose, I thought why not and here I am.

CE: What's the story of the song "Who We Are" and how was the song born?

J: Who we are, is a song with a positive message that englobes each and  every individual, saying you should be proud of who you are and who  you've become and appreciate yourself eventhough you've been through  rough times you can still rise and stand tall. It's also about a  personal experience I've been through, that is bullying and I believe  that every person in some way or another has been through this whether  it was physical or mental bullying, however did they find the help they needed at that time? I would like to raise awareness by this song and  show Europe that bullying can affect a person through his entire life  and that we shouldn't be bystanders and start acting now if we see any  type of bullying, we should let people know that we appreciate them for  who they really are and not for what society or for what some people  want them to be! We should also start listening and thinking before we  use some words because they might harm people and affect their life in a  way you never ever thought of. So this song started to exist when the  composers and authors asked me if there is some issue or message you  want to bring out in your song and I was very passionate about this  because I know how it affected me and as a teacher I know how it affects  students and in life experiences I know how it affects people who are  diverse and unique. We should start to appreciate ourselves and each  other more often.

CE: What do you feel about representing San Marino in Eurovision 2018?

J: I am truly and honestly happy to be representing San Marino, because  they were generous enough to have a competition with worldwide  candidates and being chosen from lots of candidates means a lot to be.  San Marino will always have a special place in my heart.

CE: Why you decide to participe in San Marino, after trying many times in Malta?

J: As I said before, I love the Eurovision and I always wanted to be part  of it and those who have been following my career know that I give my  heart and soul to each and every song I put in, these last two years I  was doing the same thing however, for some reason I didn't manage the  finals of the Maltese selection... then this opportunity of San Marino  came up where even lots of Maltese singers submitted their video and I  said why not let me try this, it's a great opportunity to spread my  talent elsewhere.

CE: Do you usually follow Eurovision? What do you think of the contest?  Do you have any favorite songs?

J: Yes I follow it each and every year. I love it cause it manages to bring  so many countries together. My all time favourite will always be  Euphoria, then there are My number one, Wild dances, Everyway that I can  and Only teardrops just to name a few.

CE: Can we expect any surprise from your performance?

J: Hehe, all I can say is that together with my team, I will do my very  best to make it a memorable performance not just for me but for all the  viewers!

CE: This year the Eurovision will be held in the Lisbon. Are you looking  forward to this city?

J: Sooooo looking forward to that, I've already been in Porto and I loved vthat city and the people there so I'm pretty sure Lisbon will be awesome too.

CE: Besides winning Eurovision, what's your biggest dream at the moment?

J: Travel around the world!! Mainly latin America.

CE: Name 5 of your favourite things (food, tv, movies)

J: My favourite food is Lasagna, My dog Shakespeare, Pink panther movie, Running/jogging, dancing.

CE: Do you have future projects coming?

J: Currently I'm putting all my efforts on this project and the song Who we  are, later I might work with the same composers and authors and  producers to work on some other material because the chemistry we have  is exceptional and I like the way we're working together.

CE: Do you want to say something to our readers and general Portuguese fans?

J: Muito obrigada pela sua atenção e apoio, truly and honestly appreciate it and am so looking forward to see you all in Lisbon.
