[Entrevista a Omar Naber]: "ter esta oportunidade uma segunda vez? É incrível"

Omar Naber é um dos nomes bem conhecidos dos eurofãs. Cantor e compositor de 35 anos, saltou para a fama após vencer um concurso de talentos e desde aí lançou três álbuns, o último dos quais em 2014. Em 2005 representou o seu país na Eurovisão com a música "Stop". Não se conseguiu qualificar para a final e este ano volta a Kiev com "On My Way". 

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): Como é que a música entrou na tua vida?

Omar Naber (ON): Estou envolvido na indústria musical desde os 16 anos. Componho, faço arranjos e produzo o meu próprio material e também toco guitarra, baixo e piano. Em 2004 ganhei um concurso de talentos na Eslovénia o que me garantiu a entrada no EMA, a final nacional para a Eurovisão. Ganhei e representei o meu país na Eurovisão 2005 com a canção "Stop" composta por mim. 

Voltei a participar na final nacional em 2009, 2011 e 2014. Este ano participei e venci com "On My Way", que fui eu que compus. A melhor maneira de descrever a minha música é como um pop/rock melódico com ênfase forte na voz. 

Passo o meu tempo entre Liubliana e Londres, onde tenho feito contactos, atuado em concertos e onde tenho sido cantor no metro de Londres. Pretendo concentrar os meus esforços em manter a minha fan-base mas também procurar atuar noutros territórios para dar a conhecer a minha música a um maior número de pessoas. 

CE: Costumas seguir a Eurovisão? O que é que achas do concurso? Alguma música preferida? 

ON: É muito extravagante - uma junção de países europeus (e outros) para uma competição divertida para celebrar a música e uma oportunidade para te apresentares, à tua música e ao teu país a uma larga audiência internacional. A Eurovisão é uma parte importante da minha vida. Levou a minha música a uma maior audiência internacional e deu-me a oportunidade de viajar para vários locais interessantes e conhecer pessoas fantásticas. E agora dá-me essa oportunidade de novo.

Os meus artistas preferidos da Eurovisão são definitivamente os ABBA, não apenas por causa de "Waterloo", mas por causa de todas as músicas fantásticas que produziram durante a sua carreira que fazem com que não possam não ser referidos como uns dos favoritos. A sua influência na indústria musical em todo o mundo é incrível.

E a minha canção preferida... é quase impossível dizer mas gostei tanto de "Insieme: 1992" de Toto Cutugno que fiz um cover da mesma.

CE: Estás de volta a Kiev onde representaste a Eslovénia em 2005. Ainda que não tenhas chegado à final, "Stop" mantém-se como uma fan favourite. Que memórias tens da Eurovisão 2005?

ON: Foi uma experiência muito boa. Conheci muitas pessoas fantásticas e tive a oportunidade de me apresentar e à minha música a uma audiência internacional. Foi entusiasmante fazer parte de uma produção televisiva tão grandiosa. E, com a família eurovisiva, ganhei muitos novos fãs. Até 12 anos depois de ter ido à Eurovisão esses fãs mantêm-se sempre em contacto e a seguir a minha carreira. São muito leais e esse é outro aspeto da Eurovisão que eu acho incrível. 

CE: Tentaste regressar à Eurovisão antes deste ano. Porque é que querias tanto voltar?

ON: É uma grande honra. A sério. Ter a oportunidade de representar o teu país num palco internacional é um sentimento incrível e deixa-me muito orgulhoso. E ter esta oportunidade uma segunda vez?!?! É incrível. Vou dar o meu melhor para fazer a Eslovénia orgulhosa. 

CE: Como é que descreves a tua canção eurovisiva? Sobre o que é que é e em que é que te inspiraste para a compôr?

ON: Bem, é sobre a minha experiência pessoal, quando estava perdido, só e não tinha caminho à frente. Mas sempre soube que ia encontrar um caminho e que há sempre uma luz em algum lado mesmo que não a vejamos algumas vezes. Escrevi-a há muitos anos e não tinha lugar para ela na altura nem num álbum nem para outra situação. Mas continuava a voltar a ela e no ano passado, ao falar sobre ela com alguns amigos, decidi que podia ser a música perfeita para a Eurovisão. É muito tradicional no sentido da balada eurovisiva e quando o meu amigo Žiga Pirnat, que é um talentoso compositor, sugeriu um arranjo com uma orquestra, sabia que a música se tinha tornado em algo especial.

CE: "Stop" era em esloveno. 12 anos depois estás de regresso com uma música em inglês. Achas que é mais fácil passar a mensagem e ter um bom lugar com uma música em inglês?

ON: Na minha opinião sim, sem desrespeitar a minha própria língua. Metade do mundo fala inglês e só dois milhões de pessoas percebem esloveno por isso, para mim, era uma escolha óbvia. Teria definitivamente cantado em inglês há 12 anos mas não era permitido na altura.

CE: A tua atuação vai ser parecida à que vimos na final nacional ou podemos esperar surpresas?

ON: Pode haver algumas diferenças subtis na apresentação e no estilo. Esta é uma daquelas músicas que precisa de uma atuação mínima mas eficaz e o meu objetivo vai ser passar a mensagem da melhor forma que consiga para me conectar com o público na arena mas também com o júri e os espetadores televisivos. Espero que eles gostem e que percebam a mensagem da música com a minha atuação.

CE: Ouviste alguma das outras músicas a concurso este ano? Quais as tuas preferidas?

ON: Não, ainda não ouvi nenhuma das músicas dos outros países mas fá-lo-ei nas próximas semanas.

CE: Conta-nos sobre os teus projetos futuros... Alguma coisa entusiasmante?

ON: Estou a escrever várias músicas novas e a voltar a algumas antigas por isso talvez esteja na altura de selecioná-las para o meu próximo álbum que espero ser lançado no final de 2017. Quero continuar a atuar individualmente e com a minha exclente banda na Eslovénia e em mais locais. E umas férias seriam boas também :-)

CE: Podes deixar uma mensagem para os eurofãs portugueses e dizer-nos porque é que devemos votar em ti?

ON: Obrigado por continuarem a apoiar o concurso e não apenas eu mas todos os artistas que participam na Eurovisão. E, em particular, por todo o apoio e amor que demonstram pelo concurso. Sem esse apoio a Eurovisão não poderia continuar. Assim sendo, o amor e apoio que mostram pelo evento cresce e fortalece-se a cada ano. Que continue assim durante muitos anos. Espero que tenham uma Eurovisão 2017 fantástica e envio-vos e meu amor e agradecimento como sempre.

ENGLISH VERSION

Omar Naber is a well-known name amongst the eurofans. The 35 year-old singer and composer won a talent show in Slovenia and since then released three albuns, the last of those in 2014. In 2005 he represented his country in Eurovision with the song "Stop". He didn't qualify for the final and this year he is back to Kiev with "On My Way". 

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): How did music came into your life?

Omar Naber (ON): I’ve been involved in music since the age of 16. I compose, arrange and produce my own material as well as play the guitar, bass guitar and piano. In 2004 I won a national TV Talent show in Slovenia which granted me entry to the Slovenian national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, EMA. I won this and represented my country at the 2005 Eurovision Song Contest in Kyiv with the self-composed song Stop.

I participated again in the national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009, 2011 and 2014. This year I entered again and won with the song On My Way which I wrote myself. My music may be best described as melodic pop/pop-rock with the emphasis on strong vocal delivery.

I spent my time between Ljubljana and London where I had been building contacts, performing gigs and had been a licensed busker on the London Underground! I intend to concentrate my effort on maintaining my position with my fan-base but also seek to perform across other territories, in an effort to get my music known to a wider audience.

CE: Do you usually follow Eurovision? What do you think of the contest? Do you have any favorite songs? 

ON: It is a great extravaganza – a gathering of the countries of Europe (and beyond) for a fun competition to celebrate music and an opportunity to present yourself, your music and your country to a wide international audience.  Eurovision is an important part of my life. It has brought my music to a wider international audience and afforded me the opportunity to travel to many interesting places and meet some great people. And now it presents this opportunity again.

My favourite artist from Eurovision in definitely Abba, not only because of Waterloo, but because they produced so many wonderful songs during their career, that they cannot be dismissed as one of the definite favorites. Their influence on a music industry across the  world is amazing. 

And favorite song...almost impossible to say but I did like ‘Insieme:1992’ by Toto Cutugno so much so that I did a cover of it.

CE: You’re back to Kiev where you represented Slovenia in 2005.  Even though you didn’t make it to the final, “Stop” is still a fan favourite. What memories do you have from Eurovision 2005?

ON: It was a very enjoyable experience. I met many nice people and I had this opportunity to present myself and my song to an international audience. It was exciting to be a part of such a big TV production.  And, with the Eurovision family, I found many new fans.  Even 12 years after I first went to Eurovision, those fans have stayed true over the years, always keeping in touch and following my career.  They are very loyal and this is another aspect of the whole Eurovision experience that I find incredible.

CE: You tried to get back to Eurovision before this year. Why did you want to get back?

ON: It’s a huge honour.  Really.  To have the opportunity to represent your country on the international stage is an incredible feeling, makes me very proud. And to get this opportunity for a second time?!?! This is incredible. I am going to do my very best to make Slovenia proud too.

CE: How would you describe your Eurovision song? What is it about and where did you get the inspiration to compose it?

ON: Well, it's about my personal experience, when I was lost, lonely and had no path ahead. But I always knew I'll find a way and that there is always a light somewhere ahead even if we don't see it sometimes.  I first wrote it several years ago and did not really have a place for it at the time, either on an album or for use in some situation.  But I kept returning to it and last year having discussed it with some friends, I decided it could be a perfect track for Eurovision. It is very traditional in the sense of the Eurovision ballad style and when my friend Žiga Pirnat, who is a very talented music composer and arranger, suggested the orchestral arrangement, I knew that the song had become something special.

CE: "Stop" was sang in Slovenian. 12 years later your back with an English song. Do you think it’s easier to pass the message and get a better place with an English song?

ON: In my opinion, yes, without disrespecting my own language. Half of the World speaks English and only two million people understand Slovenian, so for me it was the obvious choice. I would have definitely sung in English 12 years ago, but it was not allowed back then.   

CE: Will your performance be similar to what we’ve seen in the national final or can we expect some surprises?

ON: There may be some subtle changes in presentation and styling.  The song is one which needs minimal but effective staging and it will be my aim to deliver the message as best I can to connect with the audience in the venue as well as both juries and the wide, diverse television audience.  I hope they’ll like and get a sense of the songs message in my performance.

CE: Have you heard any of the other songs competing this year? Which ones are your favorites?

No, I have not heard any songs from any other countries yet but I am certain I will do in the weeks ahead.

CE: Tell us about your future projects… Anything exciting coming up?

ON: I am writing many new songs and revisiting old ones so perhaps it is time to get to work on selecting them for my next album which I hope will be available later in 2017.  I want to continue to perform both solo and with my excellent band in Slovenia and beyond. And, a holiday might be nice too :-)

CE: Can you please leave a message to the Portuguese eurofans and tell us why we should vote for you?

ON: Thank you for the continued support you show not just to me but to all the artists that take part in Eurovision. And in particular, the great support and love you show towards the Eurovision Song Contest itself.  Without that support, Eurovision would not be able to continue. As it is, the love and support you show to this event sees it growing and going from strength to strength each year. Long may it continue to do so.  I hope you all have a fantastic Eurovision 2017 and I send you my love and thanks as always!
