[Entrevista a Isaiah Firebrace]: 'vou fazer o meu melhor para deixar a Austrália orgulhosa de mim'

Isaiah tem apenas 17 anos mas tem já um álbum lançado, "Isaiah", depois de ter vencido a oitava edição do "X-Factor Australia". Foi escolhido pela emissora australiana e vai representar o seu país com a música "Don't Come Easy".

Faz uma introdução sobre ti.

Isaiah Firebrace (IF): O meu nome é Isaiah, tenho 17 anos, sou de uma pequena cidade do interior de Echuca - Moama e estou muito feliz de ser o representante australiano no Festival Eurovisão da Canção. Sou um indígena australiano e venho de uma família de 11 irmãos e irmãs. Sou o segundo mais novo e tive que viver a maior parte da minha vida com o meu pai, que me criou a mim e ao meu irmão sozinho. Sou muito próximo da minha família e simplesmente adoro estar rodeado por todos eles.

Como te sentes por representares a Austrália no Festival Eurovisão da Canção este ano?

IF: Representar a Austrália no Festival Eurovisão da Canção soa um bocado a surreal. Antes disto eu nunca sequer tinha saído da Austrália e saber que vou para a Ucrânia é absolutamente incrível. É um sonho tornado realidade. Amo a Austrália e nem acredito que fui o escolhido para representar o país. Quando o meu manager me contou demorou imenso para eu processar e ainda me pergunto se será real. Acho que só no dia em que o meu vídeo foi para o canal oficial do Eurovision Song Contest é que de verdade acreditei que era real e que ia acontecer. Sou um australiano orgulhoso e vou fazer o meu melhor para deixar a Austrália orgulhosa de mim. 

Quem são as tuas inspirações musicais?

IF: As minhas inspirações musicais mudam o tempo todo mas amo a Mariah Carey. Acho que as músicas dela são todas incríveis e ela tem sido uma força na indústria. Ela tem resistido ao teste do tempo e inspira-me a trabalhar arduamente e a ter uma longa carreira. Adoro imensos artistas e o novo álbum do Bruno Mars é o meu favorito de momento. Adoro música soul também por isso acredito que tenha muitas inspirações. Qualquer coisa que faça as pessoas sentirem algo!

Fala-nos da tua jornada musical até onde estás agora.

IF: Comecei a cantar com 3 anos na igreja e costumava viajar muito com o meu pai em criança para cantar em diferentes eventos da igreja. O meu pai começou a levar-me a competições de canto quando eu era adolescente e foi numa dessas competições que a minha jornada realmente começou. Conheci a minha equipa de direcção, recebi uma bolsa com um treinador vocal e depois fiz a audição para o X-Factor em 2015. Nesse ano fui eliminado porque me esqueci da letra. Fiquei devastado mas decidi continuar a trabalhar arduamente então eu viajava seis horas a cada fim de semana para estar com o meu treinador vocal para o ano seguinte. Voltei ao X-Factor em 2016 e acabei por ganhar o concurso e agora isto. Tem sido uma corrida louca mas tem-me ensinado a nunca desistir e eu espero inspirar muitas crianças a não desistir mesmo quando as coisas parecem más e a permitirem-se sonhar.

Fala-nos sobre "Don't Come Easy". Qual é a mensagem por trás da música?

IF: A música "Don't Come Easy" pode significar diferentes coisas para muitas pessoas. Pode ser interpretada como uma música de amor mas para mim é relacionada com a minha vida e com as lutas que a minha família teve enquanto crescia. É uma música inspiradora para mim e significa muito. Eu quero que as pessoas entendam a mensagem da música e usem essa mensagem para ajudar com o que quer que seja que tenham de ultrapassar. Adoro a melodia simples e acho que é uma música fresca e limpa. Espero que o público a adore tanto quanto eu.

Fala-nos sobre a inspiração por trás do videoclip.

IF: "Don't Come Easy" é uma música tão bonita que nós achamos que era realmente importante para o vídeo focar na música e no significado da letra. Mantivemos o vídeo realmente simples por causa disso. Sou um rapaz simples e nós só quisemos que as pessoas ouvissem a música e se conectassem com a letra.

O que podemos esperar ver em palco na tua performance eurovisiva?

IF: Tenho a certeza que haverão algumas surpresas mas queremos realmente manter a performance pura e muito simples. Quero que a audiência se conecte com a letra e adore o significado da música. Amo o brilho e o glamour da competição e tenho a certeza que vão ser momentos incríveis mas penso que a minha performance se vai focar em ter a certeza que faço justiça à música e ela tem uma boa recepção.

Tens alguma música eurovisiva preferida, do passado ou do presente?

IF: Acho que as músicas deste ano são muito boas e há muita variedade. Tenho adorado ver os vídeos dos outros países e há músicas fantásticas. Gosto das irmãs da Holanda - a canção é boa e as vozes delas são lindas juntas. Lembro-me de ver a Jessica Mauboy quando ela foi convidada na Eurovisão e pensado como era incrível ela estar ali. Ela é um incrível exemplo para os mais novos e espero que poder vir a ser o mesmo!!

Qual é a tua música eurovisiva preferida de sempre?

IF: Dami vai sempre ser a minha preferida - vi aquela performance tantas vezes. Ela é uma ótima pessoa e aquela performance é incrível. Adoro a Conchita também mas a Demi deitou a casa abaixo. Só existe uma Demi!

Diz-nos o que costumas fazer no teu tempo livre.

IF: No meu tempo livre neste momento eu apenas tenho tentado livrar-me da loucura e relaxar, por isso vejo um bocado de TV e ando pelo Youtube. Adoro estar com a minha família - nós apenas sentamos na cama e rimos muito - essa é a minha coisa preferida para fazer no meu tempo livre!

Vês a ti mesmo como alguém com 17 anos?

IF: Realmente eu vejo-me como alguém com 17 anos - a única diferença é que eu tenho este trabalho louco! Continuo a amar fazer as mesmas coisas que eu fazia antes só que agora sou muito mais ocupado do que era antes. Acho que a maior diferença na minha vida é que eu não uso mais os transportes públicos como costumava usar - agora vou para qualquer lado de Uber. Não acho que tudo vá mudar - apenas quero ser aquela criança do bosque que teve que ir à Eurovisão. 

O que é que mais esperas fazer na Europa/Kiev?

IF: Ainda nem sequer comecei a pensar no que gostaria de fazer na Europa - nem sequer conseguia imaginar que lá iria então agora que isso é uma realidade tenho que pensar bem sobre isso. Realmente quero comer um Chicken Kiev em Kiev e espero que possamos parar em mais algum sítio pelo caminho. O meu single é platina na Suécia por isso eu adoraria visitá-los, dizer olá e agradecer por todo o amor. 

O que é que gostavas de fazer se não fosses cantor?

IF: As pessoas costumam perguntar-me se tenho um plano de reserva e para ser honesto não tenho. Cantar é o que eu sempre quis fazer. Na escola costumavam perguntar-me o que é que eu gostaria de estudar quando deixasse a escola e essa questão sempre foi conflituosa para mim porque eu sabia que queria ser cantor mas não queria que isso soasse arrogante. Sou um sortudo por a coisa de cantar estar a correr bem porque não há plano de reserva nem nada que eu consiga sequer me imaginar a fazer!

O que vem a seguir à Eurovisão?

IF: Por muito que isto vá soar louco, acho que depois da Eurovisão é que o trabalho duro vai começar. Gostaria de fazer uma tour, espero que pela Europa, e fazer as pessoas adorarem as minhas canções e a minha música. Por isso penso que haverão muitas viagens, muitos concertos e muito trabalho duro - esse é o sonho de qualquer forma. Não quero parar de fazer o que amo e só espero que as pessoas continuem a adorar a minha voz e as minhas músicas.

Diz cinco das tuas coisas preferidas (comida, programas, filmes).

IF: Ok, cinco coisas preferidas - o meu telemóvel, a minha família, cães pizza e música mas não nesta ordem. Também adoro filmes de terror.

Tens algum talento secreto?

IF: Sou um bom corredor e um bom nadador mas acho que o meu maior talento secreto é que sou um bom cozinheiro e gosto de limpar a casa. Consigo cozinhar um bom assado apesar de não ter tempo para ficar muito tempo na cozinha. Adoraria cozinhar mais!!

Qual sítio do mundo estás mais ansioso para visitar e porquê?

IF: Bem neste momento tenho que dizer Kiev - mal posso esperar por ver a cidade e fazer parte da Eurovisão! Qualquer sítio da Europa será fantástico!

Se as pessoas fora da Austrália nunca tiverem ouvido falar de ti antes, o que devem saber sobre ti?

IF: Gostaria de eles soubessem que eu sou apenas um miúdo normal com um sonho. Música é tudo para mim e eu espero que eu consiga transmitir a mensagem das minhas músicas e que as pessoas se conectem com elas.  Adoraria que elas soubessem que se um adolescente de uma pequena cidade do interior pode ir ao Festival Eurovisão da Canção então qualquer coisa é possível e elas podem permitir-se a sonhar!

Isaiah has only 17 years old but he already has an album released, "Isaiah", after he won the 8th edition of the "X-Facotr Australia". He was chosen by the australian broadcast and he's going to represent his country with the song "Don't Come Easy".

Introduce yourself:

Isaiah Firebrace (IF): My name is Isaiah and I am 17 and from the small country town of Echuca-Moama and I am very happy to be the Australian 2017 representative for the Eurovision Song Contest. I'm an indigenous Australian and I come from a family of 11 brothers and sisters. I am the second youngest and have lived most of my life with my Dad who raised my brother and I on his own. I am really close to my family and just love being around all of them.

How does it feel to be representing Australia at this year’s Eurovision song contest 2017?

IF: To be representing Australia at the Eurovision Song Contest feels kind of surreal. Before all of this I had never even left Australia and to now know that I am going to the Ukraine is absolutely incredible. It's a dream come true. I love Australia and I just can't believe that I am the one who has been chosen to represent the country. When my manager told me it took me so long to process it and I kept wondering if it was real. I guess it wasn't until the day of the launch and my video when onto the official Eurovision youtube channel that I actually knew it was real and it was happening. I'm a very proud Australian and I will do my best to make Australia proud of me.

Who is your musical inspiration?

IF: My inspirations change all the time but I love Mariah Carey. I think her songs are all incredible and she has been such a force in the industry. She has stood the test of time and she inspires me to work hard and have a long career. I love so many artists and the new Bruno Mars album is my favourite at the moment. I love soul music too so I guess I have lots of inspirations. Anything that makes people feel something!!

Tell us about your musical journey to where you are now:

IF: I started singing when I was 3 in the church and I used to travel a lot with my dad as a kid singing at different church events. My dad starting taking me to singing competitions when I was a teenager and it was from at one of those competitions that my journey really started. I met my management team, got offered a vocal scholarship with a coach and then auditioned for the X Factor in 2015. That year I made it through but was eliminated when I forgot my lyrics. I was devastated but decided to just work harder so i travelled 6 hours every weekend to my vocal coach for the next year. I went back on the X Factor in 2016 and ended up winning the show and now this. It's been a crazy ride but it's really taught me never to give up and I hope to inspire lots of kids to not quit, even when things seem bad and to dare to dream!!

Tell us about the ‘Don’t Come Easy’, what is the message behind the song?

IF: The song "Don't Come Easy" can mean lots of things to different people. It can be interpreted as a love song, but for me I relate it to my life and the struggles our family had growing up. It's an inspiring song for me and it means a lot. I want people to understand the message of the song and to use the message to help them with whatever they are going through. I love the simple melody and I just think it is a really fresh, clean song. I hope the public love it as much as I do.

Tell us about the inspiration behind the video clip?

IF: "Don't Come Easy" is such a beautiful song that we felt it was really important for the video to focus on the song and the meaning of the lyrics. We kept the video really simple for this reason. I'm a simple guy and we just wanted people to listen to the lyrics and connect with them.

What can we expect to see on the stage for your EV performance?

IF: I'm sure there will be a few surprises in store but we really want to keep the performance pure and very simple. I want the audience to connect with the message and love the meaning of the song. I

 love the glitz and the glamour of the competition and I'm sure there will be some incredible moments but I think my performance will focus on making sure I do the song justice and give a strong delivery.

Any favourite EV acts past & present?

IF: I think the acts this year are so good and there is so much variety. I have loved looking at the other countries videos and there are some amazing songs. I really like the sisters from The Netherlands - that song is great and their voices are beautiful tougher. I remember watching Jessica Mauboy when she was a guest at Eurovision and thinking how incredible it was that she was there. She's an incredible role model for young people and I hope that I can be the same!!

What is your all-time favourite EV act?

IF: Dami will always be my favourite - I have watched that performance so many times. She's such a great person and that performance was incredible. I did love Conchita as well but Dami took the roof off and blew the house down. There's only one Dami!

Tell us what you do in your spare time:

IF: In my spare time at the moment I just try to get over the craziness and relax, so I watch a bit of TV and YouTube. I love hanging out with my family - we just sit on the bed and laugh a lot - that is my favourite thing to do in my spare time!

Do you think of yourself as the average 17 year old?

IF: I really see myself as very average - the only difference is I have this crazy job!! I still love doing all the same things I did before it's just that now I am a lot busier than I was before. I think the biggest difference is my life is that I don't take public transport anymore like I used to - these days I go everywhere in an Uber. I don't think I'll ever change - I just want to stay humble and be that kid from the bush who got to go to Eurovision.

What are you most looking forward to doing in Europe / Kyiv?

IF: I haven't even started to think about what I would like to do in Europe - I couldn't have even imagined that I would be going there so now that it is a reality I have to have a good think about it. I really want to eat a Chicken Kiev in Kyiv and I am hoping we get to stop somewhere else on the way. My single is platinum in Sweden so I would love to visit them and say hi and thanks for all the love.

What would you be doing if you weren’t singing?

IF: People ask me a lot if I have a backup plan and to be honest I really don't. Singing is all I have ever wanted to do. At school everyone used to ask what I would like to study when I left school and that question was always so confronting for me because I knew I wanted to be a singer but I didn't want it to sound arrogant. I'm just lucky that the singing thing is going well because there is no back plan and nothing I can even imagine myself doing!

What’s next for you after Eurovision?

IF: Even though this might sound crazy, I think that after Eurovision is when all the hard work will really start. I would like to tour, hopefully Europe, and get people really loving my songs and my music. So I think there will be lots of travel, lots of concerts and lots of hard work - that's the dream anyway. I don't want to stop doing what I love and I just hope people keep loving my voice and my songs.

Name 5 of your favourite things (food, tv, movies)

IF: Ok 5 of my favourite things - my phone, my family, dogs, pizza and music but not in that order!!! I also love horror movies.

Do you have any secret talents?

IF: I'm a good runner and a good swimmer but I think my most secret talent is that I am a good cook and a good cleaner. I can cook a really nice roast although I haven't really had a chance to be in the kitchen for a while. I'd love to do more cooking!!

Where in the world are you most looking forward to visiting and why?

IF: Well at this time I have to say Kyiv - I can't wait to see the city and to be a part of Eurovision. Anywhere is Europe will be amazing!!

If people outside Australia have never heard of you before, what should they know about you?

IF: I'd like them to know that I am just an ordinary kid with a dream. Music is everything to me and I hope that I can convey the messages of my songs and that people will connect with them. I would love them to know that if a teenager from a small country town can get to the Eurovision Song Contest then anything is possible and they should dare to dream too!!
