INTERVIEW: SOLUNA SAMAY (DENMARK 2012)!

Crónicas de Eurofestivais: How did Soluna Samay started?

Soluna Samay: My father is a musician. So I started playing music when I was 4 years old and haven't stopped since.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais: Who are your musical inspirations and what kind of music do you generally listen to?

Soluna Samay: I listen to everything from The Beatles to Coldplay. Lately I've mostly been listening to artists like Adele, Tom Waits, John Mayer, Bob Dylan, Taylor Swift and Ani DiFranco.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais: Are you a regular follower of Eurovision, an ESC-fan?  It has been a dream to go to Eurovision to represent your country?

Soluna Samay: I couldn't really follow the Eurovision Song Contest when I lived in Guatemala. But I have seen the show almost every year since 2000. I never really thought that I would be representing Denmark at Eurovision, it was actually quite the coincidence that I was asked to participate this year, and the reason I said yes was because I really love the song.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais: What's the song that has marked you most in the history of Eurovision?

Soluna Samay: The first time I ever saw Eurovision was actually in 2000, the year my family and I moved from Guatemala to Denmark. It was also the year Denmark won with the Olsen Brothers, so "Fly on the Wings of Love" became the soundtrack for my first year in Denmark and it brings me many good memories.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais: About your song, what could you tell us about it?

Soluna Samay: "Should've Known Better" is a solid pop song with a modern sound, but it also has profound lyrics that anyone can relate to. It has a strong message and I hope it will touch peoples hearts all over Europe.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais: About your performance in May, do you have something already planned?

Soluna Samay: Our show is all about the song. We will try to create a very intimate performance. It will probably be a little different from the usual Eurovision performances. I will have my band on stage with me, just like at our national final here in Denmark.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais: What would be your feelings if Denmark is one of the 10 qualifiers on semi-final 1?

Soluna Samay: I would be very happy!! Qualifying is already a bit of a victory in a way.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais: Consider you winning the great final of Eurovision 2012, what would it mean for you?

Soluna Samay: Winning Eurovision would be crazy! I would love to bring the show to Denmark! But aside from that, winning would definitely be a great start to my music career, since millions of people will have seen me on TV. But even if I don't win, I hope participating in Eurovision will make it easier for me to share my music with the whole world.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais: Have you heard any of the other songs in competition? What’s your favourite?

Soluna Samay: I've listened to quite a few songs from the other countries. My first impression is that there are a lot of dance songs and a lot of ballads. Definitely lot's of tough competition. I quite like Sweden's song.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais: What do you think about the song that Portugal will send to the Eurovision ("My Life" by Filipa Sousa)?

Soluna Samay: It's a powerful ballad and I love the portuguese language.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais: After Eurovision, do you have any projects?

Soluna Samay: I am currently working on my second studio album, which I am working on with the songwriters and producers of “Should've Known Better“. So I will probably be getting ready for my album release once I get back from Baku.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais: Would you like to return one day to Eurovision?

Soluna Samay: You never know, depends on how my experience in Baku is.
