Euroestatuetas - décimo segundo texto - melhor, pior e primeiro vencedor português

       Para aqueles que ainda se lembram daquela que classificámos como “Melhor atuação de sempre” não é difícil adivinhar qual é, também, a nossa melhor música de sempre. Não deve haver muitos portugueses (e estrangeiros também) que discordem de nós quando dizemos que “Senhora do Mar” foi a nossa grande música no festival. Não desfazendo grandes artistas do nosso panorama musical como Paulo de Carvalho, Fernando Tordo, Simone de Oliveira ou Rita Guerra, Vânia Fernandes (que não tem metade do reconhecimento que merece) foi quem esteve mais perto e ao mesmo tempo mais longe da vitória portuguesa. Uma grande música aliada a uma grande voz já prometia muito, mas tivemos uma atuação de palco como nunca havíamos visto. A grande Vânia Fernandes mostrou a todos como é que se canta e interpreta uma música do calibre desta e deixou-nos com a lágrima ao canto do olho de tanto orgulho que sentimos. Fomos injustiçados como nunca havíamos sido. Merecíamos a vitória e acabámos num mero 13º lugar que soube a muito pouco. Como é que se explica que um país fique em 2º lugar na semifinal (aquela semifinal de nervos em que esperámos até à última para que num dos envelopes estivesse a nossa bandeira) e abaixo do top 10 na final? Não se explica! Uma coisa é certa: se não ganhámos com “Senhora do Mar”, nunca havemos de ganhar.

       Tal como na categoria anterior, também não deve haver muitas discordâncias nesta. Passámos décadas a enviar grandes músicas ao festival, músicas que ficaram para a história e que, ainda hoje, toda a gente sabe, mas com a chegada do novo milénio as coisas deterioraram-se e a prova viva disso reside naquilo que enviámos à Eurovisão em 2011. Não questionando a capacidade de fazer rir que os Homens da Luta têm (a verdade é que as interrupções a discursos políticos e as manifestações tinham de facto piada), eles não são cantores (bem longe disso), nem compositores. Claro que o Jel e o Falâncio não têm qualquer culpa, a culpa está no “júri especializado” que escolheu as canções que iam à votação online, porque, a partir daí, era fácil prever que “A luta é Alegria” seria a mais votada pelo público. Na final o que aconteceu é simples: o público agarrou-se ao telefone para votar na sua banda querida sem sequer saber o que é o Festival da Canção, sem perceber que estavam a votar na vergonha à escala europeia para o nosso país! Além disto tivemos um júri distrital de topo (como tem vindo a ser normal) que deu pontos a esta espécie de música. Num festival com grandes cantores (nos últimos anos foi talvez um dos que melhores artistas tinham) escolheu-se isto para nos representar: Júri brilhante, público que votou ainda melhor! “A luta é Alegria” nem sequer era um grito de revolta bem feito, era apenas um apelo a lutar sabe-se lá pelo quê.

       Em 2006, eu não sabia bem o que era a Eurovisão, mas segui a transmissão do Festival RTP da Canção, num ano de regresso do formato “tradicional”, com bastante entusiasmo. Achei fantástica a possibilidade de ver um desfile de canções inéditas e poder escolher a minha favorita, sendo que, na época, para um mero miúdo de 12 anos, aquela que parecia ser a melhor escolha era “Coisas de Nada”, das Nonstop, pelo ritmo “mais mexido” que apresentava face às concorrentes, tendo eu ficado satisfeitíssimo com a vitória. No entanto, com o passar dos anos e com um gosto ligeiramente mais refinado, fui-me apercebendo de que o “Sei Quem Sou (Portugal)” teria sido, de facto, um grande marco na participação de Portugal na Eurovisão e poderíamos ter feito uma grande figura. À parte disso, há a considerar que foi uma simpática edição do Festival, com uma produção cuidada e canções distintas e interessantes, marcando a minha primeira experiência como espetador destes eventos, sendo que me sinto entristecido por, ao fim de 7 anos, já não ter hipótese de assistir a uma grande festa da música portuguesa.

Jessica:

       Sempre me lembro de cá em casa se ver o Festival da Canção e a Eurovisão. Acho que é um tradição que vem de família, sendo que a minha mãe também sempre se lembra de o ver. O primeiro festival que me lembro de ver, apesar de ser com muitas falhas, é o de 2003. Foi o último ano em que tivemos um grande nome do nosso panorama musical a representar-nos. Rita Guerra foi a cantora escolhida internamente pela RTP para levar a nossa bandeira até Riga, na Letónia. É talvez a parte menos relevante, mas lembro da publicidade levada a cabo pela RTP com Rita Guerra a anunciar as 3 músicas concorrentes. Escolhemos uma grande música para nos representar numa voz sem igual, e acabámos num lugar lastimável (22º). Confesso que, com 10 anos não fazia sequer ideia da dimensão da Eurovisão, nem tão pouco sabia que um dia havia de ser uma fã incondicional deste, mas lembro-me da felicidade com que fiquei por ser a grande Rita Guerra a representar-nos. 10 anos depois gostava de voltar a ver esta grande cantora que muito admiro pisar o palco eurovisivo e ensinar a muito boa gente o que é cantar e o que é interpretar uma música, mas o mais provável seria ver a Europa a ignorá-la mais uma vez!

ENGLISH VERSION

BEST PORTUGUESE WINNER

       For those who still remember the song we classified as "best performance ever" is not hard to guess which is also our Portuguese best music ever. There aren’t many Portuguese people (and also foreign) who disagree with us when we say "Senhora do Mar" was our greatest music ever at the festival. Not undoing the great artists of our music scene as Paul de Carvalho, Fernando Tordo, Simone de Oliveira and Rita Guerra, Vânia Fernandes (which doesn’t have half the recognition she deserves in our country) was the one who came closest to the unique Portuguese victory. A great music combined with a great voice has promised much, but we saw a stage performance as we had never seen before. The great Vânia Fernandes showed everyone how to sing a song like this and left us with a tear of pride in the corner of our eyes. We were injured as we have never been. We deserved the win and we ended in the 13th place. How can we explain that a country that finished in the 2nd place in the semifinal doesn’t end even in the top 10 of the big final? It’s impossible to explain! One thing is for sure: if we did not win with "Senhora do Mar", we will never win.

WORST PORTUGUESE WINNER

       As in the previous category many people should agree with us in this one. We sent great musics to the contest for decades, songs that made history and even today, everyone knows, but with the new millennium things have deteriorated and the living proof of that is what we sent to Eurovision in 2011 . Not questioning the ability to make people  laugh that Homens da Luta have (the truth is that disruptions to political speeches had indeed joke), they are not singers (far from it) or composers. Sure Jel and Falâncio weren’t guilty of winning Festival da Canção. The guilt is in the “experts juries" who chose the songs that went to vote online because from there it was easy to predict that "A luta é alegria" would be the most voted by the public. In the end what happened is simple: The public grabbed up to the phone to vote for their beloved band without even knowing what the Eurovision Song Contest is. In addition we had a “great” district jury (as has been normal in FC) that gave points to this kind of music. A festival with great singers (in recent years was perhaps the one with the best artists) ad this was chosen to represent us: brilliant jury and public who voted for them! 

FIRST PORTUGUESE WINNER WE SAW

Sérgio:

       In 2006, I didn’t even know what was the Eurovision, but I followed the broadcast of the Festival RTP da Canção, the year that the tradition format returned with a lot of enthusiasm. I found a fantastic opportunity to see a parade of new songs and being able to choose my favorite, and, in time, to a mere 12 year old kid, the one that seemed the best choice was "Coisas de Nada", by Nonstop for the good rhythm  that it presented so I was amazed with that victory. However, over the years, and with a slightly more refined taste, I realized that "Sei Quem Sou (Portugal)" would have been, in fact, a better participation of Portugal in the Eurovision and could have done a great figure. Apart from that, it was a very good edition with lots of different songs and genders  that marked my first experience was this event spectator and it makes me sad that 7 years later I can’t see this great celebration of the Portuguese music. 

Jessica:

       I always remember to watch Festival RTP da Canção and Eurovision. I think it is a tradition that comes from my family and my mother also always remember seeing it. The first festival I remember seeing, although with many flaws, is the 2003’s. It was the last year we choose a well-known singer in Portugal to represent us. Rita Guerra was chosen internally by RTP to carry our flag to Riga, Latvia. It is perhaps the least important part, but I remember the advertising carried out by RTP with Rita Guerra announcing the 3 songs in competition. We chose a great song to represent us in a unique voice in our country and we had a pitiful place (22nd). I confess that, with 10 years old I had no idea of the importance that Eurovision had nor knew that one day I would be a huge fan of it, but I remember how happy I was to see that the great Rita Guerra was going to represent us. 10 years later I would love to see her again in the eurovision stage teaching people how to sing like she does amazingly but she would probably be ignored like she was in 2003 by Europe!

Euroestatuetas - décimo primeiro texto - artista desejado, esperado e retornado

       Imaginem o que era voltar a ter grandes nomes da música mundial na Eurovisão ao estilo dos ABBA ou Celine Dion. Tivemos Bonnie Tyler este ano, por exemplo, mas não foi no auge da sua carreira. Pensem no que o festival se poderia tornar se os países enviassem a concurso os seus mais famosos cantores e bandas. Milhões e milhões de fãs à espera de ver os seus ídolos pisarem o palco que todos nós admiramos! Estamos apenas a sonhar alto, mas não achavam magnífico que o Reino Unido nos presenciasse com Jessie J, Adele, Keane ou os Coldplay? Não era lindo ver a Irlanda enviar os The Script para palco? A Suécia com os Swedish House Mafia ou a Espanha com Enrique Iglésias? E agora vamos pensar ainda mais alto… Imaginem que a Irlanda enviava os U2. A banda mundialmente famosa que esgota concertos em todo o lado, independentemente dos preços dos mesmos. Bono Vox no palco eurovisivo a cantar músicas do género de “With or without you”, “Vertigo”, “Beautiful day” ou “One Love”! A Eurovisão passaria a ter todo um outro calibre. Deixaria de ser vista (pelo menos cá) como o festival de música europeu ultrapassado há anos e passaria a ser a reunião das grandes bandas e cantores europeus num só palco! O festival ganhava reconhecimento (ainda mais), mais fãs e por conseguinte mais dinheiro: Só benefícios.

    Embora atualmente se dê lugar a “novos talentos” na Eurovisão, por vezes encontramos alguns nomes reconhecidos internacionalmente antes da sua entrada para o certame. Possivelmente o maior exemplo disso é Bonnie Tyler, que representou este ano o Reino Unido com “Believe In Me”, uma artista mundialmente conhecida por canções como “Total Eclipse of the Heart” ou “Holding Out For a Hero” nos anos 80, e nos surpreendeu ao aceitar representar o Reino Unido na Eurovisão, fazendo com que, inclusive, a sua participação fosse notícia em variadíssimos jornais e sítios online. Com uma carreira reconhecidíssima, Bonnie levou a palco uma canção bastante agradável, mesmo que com a sua prestação deixasse algo a desejar, sendo um nome tão sonante…

       Muitos são os artistas que devem voltar ao Eurofestival para uma “segunda chance”… E há quem mereça uma terceira! Valentina Monetta surpreendeu tudo e todos pela Europa ao repetir a sua presença na Eurovisão com uma balada fortíssima, com muito mais qualidade do que o que havia levado em 2012 numa canção dedicada às redes sociais. No entanto, a qualidade da prestação não foi reconhecida e o tema ficou-se pelo 11.º lugar na semifinal, embora Valentina tenha provado que possui um enorme talento. Deste modo, devido à grande injustiça ocorrida nesta última edição, Valentina devia insistir para provar que “à terceira é de vez” e fazer com que, levando uma grande canção como a deste ano, consiga, finalmente fazer com que São Marino obtenha presença numa final! E o certo é que a confirmação da terceira participação consecutiva já foi feita!

ARTIST THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN IN THE CONTEST

       Imagine what it was to have great names of world music in Eurovision just like ABBA and Celine Dion. Bonnie Tyler was there this year, for example, but she wasn’t in her best career moment. Think of what the festival could became if countries send to the contest their most famous singers and bands. Millions and millions of fans waiting to see their idols step on the stage that we all admire! We are just dreaming, but did you not be really happy if UK send there Jessie J, Adele, Keane or Coldplay? Wasn’t it beautiful to see Ireland sending The Script? Sweden with Swedish House Mafia or Spain with Enrique Iglesias? And now let's think even louder ... Imagine that Ireland sent U2. One of the world’s most famous bands that have their concerts full of people everywhere regardless of ticket’s prices. Bono Vox on the eurovision stage singing songs like "With or without you", "Vertigo", "Beautiful day" or "One Love"! Eurovision would became a whole other thing. Would no longer be seen (at least here) as the European Music Festival that is no longer good, but as the place where the most amazing European singers and bands find! The festival  would gain recognition (even more), more fans and therefore more money: Only benefits.

ARTIST THAT NO ONE EVER EXPECTED TO SEE IN ESC

       Although currently eurovision is more about "new talents", sometimes we recognize some of the names in it before we see the contest or listen to the songs. Possibly the greatest example of this is Bonnie Tyler, who represented the UK this year with "Believe In Me", an artist known worldwide for songs like "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Holding Out For a Hero" in the '80s, and surprised us by agreeing to represent the UK at Eurovision, making their participation being in a lot of different newspapers and news online. With a great career, Bonnie took to the stage a song quite enjoyable, even if her performance wasn’t good enough for the “name” she has in the music panorama. 

ARTIST THAT WILL COME BACK TO ESC

       Many are the artists who should return to Eurofestival for a "second chance" ... And there are those who deserve a third! Valentina Monetta surprised everyone in Europe by repeating her presence in Eurovision with a very strong ballad, with much quality than what she presented us in 2012 with the song dedicated to social networks. However, the quality of the performance was not recognized by everyone and the theme ended up in the 11th place of the semifinal despite Valentina showed everyone she has a lot of talent. Due to the injustice done in this latest edition, Valentina has to prove that "the third time's the charm" and make San Marino going to the final with a song like this year or even better!
