Michael Schulte deu-se a conhecer no youtube e, mais tarde, ficou no 3.º lugar do The Voice of Germany.

Em 2012 participei no The Voice of Germany e cheguei ao terceiro lugar.

CE: Como é que os teus irmãos reagiram a “You Let Me Walk Alone”?

Quais as tuas preferidas?

MS: Conheço-as todas.

ENGLISH VERSION

Michael Schulte strated of as a youtuber in 2008 and later got a 3rd place on The Voice of Germany. His first album was released in 2012 and his newest one will be release in the beggining of May. He will represent Germany in Eurovission 2018.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): Tell us a little about yourself. How did music came into your life?

Michael Schulte (MS): I started singing and playing the guitar at the age of 7. But: I have never had any lessons! In 2006 I started posting videos of me singing on YouTube, gaining a pretty decent fanbase, what of course made me super proud and also made me notice something like “Hey, wait.. there are actually people that really do like my music”. So I figured I wanna do this as a profession. In 2012 I then was in the final of The Voice of Germany, making a third place. From then on I played hundreds of concerts, was touring a lot and released 7 albums. And now I’m gonna be in Lisbon and sing for Germany. This is of course the highlight of my career so far!

CE: Do you usually follow Eurovision? What do you think of the contest? Do you have any favorite songs?

MS: I’ve always been a big fan of the Eurovision Song Contest, watching it every year with my entire family. Always was one of my highlights of the year. I think I have not missed one single ESC in all these years. So it’s even more crazy that I’m gonna be performing for Germany this year!
I just love that so many countries with different music tastes come together and have an exciting evening with good music.
My all time favorite song is „Fly on the wings of love“ from Denmark, winning song in the year 2000. As I’m danish speaking and kind of half danish this was just magically for me!

CE: Was Eurovision something that you wished for your future or was it just an opportunity that came along?

MS: As mentioned I always followed the ESC. Already as a child I was a big fan. So I of course also was thinking about how it would be to one day be on a stage like that and perform for Germany. But honestly, I would’ve never thought that this would become reality! It is a dream come true definitely!

CE: The staging in Unser Lied für consisted of a background of photos of fathers and their children. Do you plan on keeping the concept or is there another plan for the staging in Lisbon?

MS: The show is not gonna be exactly the same as in the preselection in Berlin. It’s not gonna be totally different, but  we have a few changes in mind. I can’t tell though what exactly is going to change of course :)

CE: A lot of people have been questioning how the songwriting process works when you have multiple people writing about such a personal issue. How do three non-blood related songwriters write a song about your personal loss?

MS: It’s definitely not an easy thing to do. I of course had to open a lot and tell the other writers a lot about myself and what I wanted to write about. That was very emotional and personal.
This can work out because it was me leading through the writing process all the time. On such a content the artist always has to say what he wants and what he does not want. The other writer’s job more or less was to help me out and get good ideas once I had difficulties finding the right way.

CE: “You Let Me Walk Alone” sounds like a song made for a big stage but, at the same time, it fits perfectly on your discography. Was there a conscientious effort in the studio to make your song more appropriate for the biggest music show in the world?

MS: There definitely was. I was very clear about the fact that not every song would work on a show like the ESC. It’s a TV show of course, and if you want the audience to like you from only hearing and seeing you for 3 minutes, then it needs to be an on-point-song. That’s what we tried to write. But still the goal always was that the song would not be any different in comparison to other songs that I released.

CE: How have your siblings respond to “You Let Me Walk Alone”?

MS: Very positive, but also very emotional of course.

CE: Germany got a few bad results in the past years. Do you think you can change that?

MS: I hope! And somehow I think that I can, yes! I think my song has something special and that’s something an ESC-song needs. I can’t say if I can make it in the Top10 for example because that’s very hard to predict and because there are so many good songs, but I will give it my everything and hope for a good result!

CE: Have you heard any of the other songs competing this year? Which ones are your favorites?

MS: I acutally know them all. I’m following all the preselections since January and really do know all songs that are released. Right now I like the songs from France and the Czech Republic the most. But there are many good songs!

CE: Have you ever been to Portugal or will this be your first time? What do you think about the country?

MS: I was actually in Portugal when Portugal won the ESC. And now I’ll be back in Portugal exactly one year later. So good!

CE: Tell us about your future projects… Anything exciting coming up?

MS: I’m gonna release an album on May 3rd and I’m gonna play a tour in November 2018!
