[Entrevista] Gabriela Gunčíková: "quero inspirar todos a viverem os seus sonhos"

Gabriela Gunčíková é uma jovem cantora de 22 anos mais conhecida pelo seu segundo lugar no na versão local do Ídolos. Desde aí lançou dois álbuns e venceu  um prémio de melhor nova artistas em 2011. Este ano foi escolhida internamente para representar o seu país na Eurovisão com o tema "I Stand".

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): Como é que começaste a tua vida artística? 

Gabriela Gunčíková (GG): Desde cedo que o mau pai tocava para mim as músicas das grades bandas de metal dos anos 80 desde os Iron Maiden aos AC/DC e mais. Por isso cresci a adorar música metal sem me aperceber disso ha ha. Isso influenciou a forma como eu canto. Adoro cantar com poder e autoridade. Mas também percebi que estava a perder a minha voz regularmente porque não sabia controlá-la. Encontrei um professor de canto fantástico nos EUA chamado Ken Tamplin que me ensinou a ganhar alcance, poder e autoridade sem perder a minha voz. Não posso agradecer-lhe o suficiente pelo que fez pela minha voz e pela minha carreira. Agora sinto-me tão forte como se não houvesse nada que não possa cantar por causa desta arma secreta que tenho para cantar agora. Como alguns de vós sabem, fiquei em 2.º lugar no Ídolos na República Checa e daí passei a vocalista da Trans Siberian Orchestra e agora vou à Eurovisão. Tem sido uma viagem fantástica e espero continuá-la. 

CE: Segues a Eurovisão regularmente? Qual a tua música preferida de sempre?

GG: Há algumas: ABBA – "Waterloo": Suécia, Serebro – "Song #1": Rússia, Céline Dion – "Ne partez pas sans moi": Suíça, Olivia Newton-John – "Long Live Love": Reino Unido.

CE: Alguma vez sonhaste participar na Eurovisão?

GG: Como competi noutras competições musicais antes, achei que esta era uma oportunidade única para mim. Quando penso na Eurovisão, penso nela como um Mundial de futebol. O que quero dizer é: mais de 40 países juntam-se e competem com canções e músicos que irão representar melhor o seu país. É maravilhoso ter países e pessoas com passados diferentes a competir e mesmo assim a apoiarem-se mutuamente ao mesmo tempo. Há algumas coisas na vida capazes de produzir esta espécie de comunidade e aquilo que nos une é a música. Pessoalmente, não vejo isto como uma chance de alguém ser melhor que alguém. Vejo-o como uma oportunidade para nos unirmos.

CE: Como é que descreves a tua canção?

GG: Se ouvirem a letra da música, esta representa passar pelas coisas sozinho. Vais ter muitos obstáculos no teu caminho. Muitas pessoas vão dizer-te que não podes fazer alguma coisa. A vida arranja formas de tentar esmagar o teu espírito. Mas a vida também é boa e cheia de inspiração. Esta música é sobre isso. Para encorajar e inspirar mesmo quando as coisas parecem difíceis. Os momentos difíceis das nossas vidas só mostram quem nós realmente somos. E por isso este “I Stand” é para todos vocês.

CE: Podemos esperar surpresas da tua parte? Tens alguma ideia de como será a tua atuação?

GG: Esse é o meu pequeno segredo. Fiquem atentos, it's gonna rock!

CE: A Eurovisão ainda é uma porta aberta para ajudar os cantores? Tens medo de ter um mau lugar?

GG: Estou muito orgulhosa por representar o meu país. Deixa-me responder à tua pergunta com uma pequena história sobre mim.
Cresci numa pequena cidade na República Checa. Muitas vezes as pessoas que vivem em pequenas cidades têm dificuldades em ver mais além. Mas eu sempre soube que havia algo mais, algo maior que a minha cidade. Muitas vezes temos medo daquilo que não entendemos e por isso não tentamos fazer as coisas. Consigo perceber que é mais fácil acreditar nas mentiras que dizemos a nós mesmos que não conseguimos fazer isto ou aquilo. E algumas vezes as pessoas à nossa volta tentam confirmar isso mesmo e dizem-nos que não conseguimos fazer isto ou aquilo. Desde pequena que deixei de acreditar nessa mentira e parei de ouvir aqueles que a confirmavam. Aí percebi que tudo é possível se estivermos dispostos a trabalhar arduamente e a acreditar. Esta é a Gabriella Guncikova. Gostava de desafiar toda a gente. Todos nós temos um dom diferente e não somos iguais e é isso que nos faz fantásticos e únicos. Vivam os vossos sonhos, lutem por eles, não deixem que ninguém (inclusive vocês mesmos) vos diga que não são capazes. Há uma velho ditado que diz “um destes dias não é nenhum destes dias”. A vossa hora chegou! Façam-no!

CE: Tens alguma música preferida de outro país este ano?

GG: Acho que há muitos concorrentes fortes. Tantos sabores de diferentes culturas!
Especialmente o refrão de “LoveWave”, canções como “Miracle” que tem uma vibe pop muito boa. Também adoro a melodia de “Ljubav Je”, o refrão de “Help You Fly”, gosto do groove de “What's The Pressure” e outras. Há muito boa competição este ano.

CE: Qual a tua opinião sobre a não participação de Portugal no ESC 2016? Lembras-te de alguma participação portuguesa?

GG: Acho que é um pouco triste para os artistas em Portugal. Têm tanto para oferecer. Toda a gente conhece artistas como Amália Rodrigues, o pianista António Pinho Vargas e a cantora Maria João. Espero que continuem a emergir novos artistas em Portugal.

CE: Tens planos novos para o futuro? 

GG: Sim, já estamos a planear novas canções no seguimento de “I Stand”. Também tenho algumas coisas mais rock no youtube que fiz com o Ken Tamplin. 

CE: Podes deixar uma mensagem para os teus fãs portugueses?

GG: Quero inspirar todos a viverem os seus sonhos. Lembrar todos os concorrentes que já são vencedores só por participarem. Foram escolhidos pelos vossos países para os representarem o que quer dizer que já são únicos, especiais e não ouviram aqueles que vos disseram que não eram capazes. Todos precisamos de ser mais como vocês! A Eurovisão é uma oportunidade de mostrar a diversidade mas também a união entre nós. Respeito-vos todos e desejo-vos o melhor para a Eurovisão 2016. Espero continuar a ver o apoio de futuros artistas portugueses.

ENGLISH VERSION

Gabriela Gunčíková is a 22 year old singer well-known for her second place on the local version of the talent show Pop Idol. Since then she released two albums and won an award for best new artist in 2011. This year she was chosen to represent her country in Eurovision with the song "I Stand".

CE: How did you start your artistic life?

GG: Early on my daddy would play for me all of the great 80s metal bands from iron maiden to AC/DC and more.  So I actually grew up kind of a metalhead and not even realizing it ha ha. What that did for me was it influenced the way that I sang. I love to sing with power and authority. But I also realized I was losing my voice with regularity because I did not know how to control it. I found an incredible vocal coach in the USA named Ken Tamplin who taught me how to gain amazing range, power and authority without losing my voice and with great longevity. I cannot thank him enough for what he's done for my voice and for my career. Now I feel as though there's hardly anything I can't sing because of this secret weapon I now have for singing. As some of you may already know I went on to place 2nd for Czech "Superstar" and then to be a lead vocalist for Trans Siberian Orchestra and now Eurovision.  It's been an amazing ride and I look forward to continuing the journey!

CE: Do you follow regularly the Eurovision? Which is your favourite Eurovision song of all time?

GG: There would be a few actually. ABBA – "Waterloo": Sweden, Serebro – "Song #1": Russia, Céline Dion – "Ne partez pas sans moi": Switzerland, Olivia Newton-John – "Long Live Love": United Kingdom,

CE: Have you ever dreamed of participating in the Eurovision Song Contest?

GG: Having competed in other singing competitions before, I thought this would be a unique opportunity for me. When I think of Eurovision, I think of it like World Cup soccer.  Here's what I mean. Over 40 countries get together and compete for songs and artists that best represent their country. How awesome is it to have very unique countries and people from very different backgrounds, competing and yet supporting each other at the same time. There are a few things in

this life that can produce this kind of community, and the thing that unifies us his music. I personally do not see this as someone being better than someone else. I see it as a chance for unification.

CE: How would you describe your Eurovision song?

GG: If you listen to the lyrics of the song it represents going it alone. Many obstacles will be thrown in your path. Many people Will tell you you cannot do something. Life has a way of trying to crush your spirit. But life is also good and full of inspiration. This song is about that. To encourage and inspire even when things seem to be tough. Tough times in our life just shows who we really are as people. And so for all of you out there I Stand is for you!

CE: Can we expect any surprises from you? Do you have any idea of how it is going to be your performance?

GG: That is my little secret. Stay tuned, it's gonna rock!

CE: Is Eurovision still an open door to help the singers? Are you afraid to get a bad place in the contest? 

GG: I am proud to represent my country. Let me answer your question with a little history about myself. I grew up in a very small village in the Czech Republic. Often times people from small towns have a hard time seeing beyond their circumstance. But I always knew there was something more, something greater than my village. Many times we are afraid of what we don't understand,  so we don't take chances. I can see how easy it is to believe the lie we tell ourselves that we cannot do this or that. And sometimes people around us try to confirm that and tell us, know you cannot do this or that. At a young age I stopped believing that lie about myself and I stopped listening to those who try to confirm that in me. Once I realized anything is possible if you're willing to work hard at it and if you dare to believe. This is Gabriella Guncikova. I would like to challenge everyone out there, that they all have a gift. We all have different gifts and we are not all the same and that's what makes us awesome and unique. Live your dreams, go for it, don't let anyone (including yourself) tell you cannot do it. There is an old saying, "one of these days, is none of these days." Your time is now! Just do it!

CE: Do you have any favourite music from other country in the contest?

GG: I actually think there are a lot of strong contenders. So many great flavors from different diverse cultures.
Especially the choruses to songs like: Iveta Mukuchyan - LoveWave, songs like Miracle have a cool Christina pop vibe form Samra - Miracle, I also love melodic minor songs like Dalal & Deen feat. Ana Rucner and Jala - Ljubav Je for the melody., the chorus to IVAN - Help You Fly (Belarus), Iike the groove to Laura Tesoro - What's The Pressure and others. Some good competition this year :-)

CE: What is your opinion about the non-participation of Portugal in ESC 2016? Do you remember any Portuguese participation?

GG: I think it's a little sad for the artists of Portugal.  They have so much to offer.
Of course everyone know of artists like Amália Rodrigues, pianist António Pinho Vargas and the singer Maria João. I hope new artists continue to emerge from Portugal!

CE: Do you have any new projects for the future?

GG: Yes, we are already started plans for new songs in the vein of I Stand. I also have some fun rock stuff I have done on youtube with Ken Tamplin as well.

CE: Can you please leave a few words to your Portuguese fans…

GG: I want to inspire everyone to live their dreams. Remember for all of the contestants that did get to participate, you are all already winners! You were chosen by your countries to represent them which means you are already are unique, special and you didn't listen to those who said you couldn't do it.  We all need to be more like you!. Eurovision is an opportunity to show the diversity and unity between us all. A respect and love each and everyone of you and wish you all the best for Eurovision 2016. I hope to see a continued support and enlisting of future artists from Portugal!
