Christabelle Borg vai representar Malta no Festival Eurovisão da Canção em Lisboa com a música "Taboo". A cantora aceitou responder a algumas perguntas feitas pelo Crónicas de Eurofestivais, que agora trazemos em exclusivo para vocês.
Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): Como começou o teu percurso na música?
Christabelle: Eu canto desde os três anos de idade e apareci logo na televisão com quatro anos... já faz algum tempo! Ao longo dos anos fiz algumas coisas, participei no Junior Eurovision Song Contest e entrei para Mount St. Mary's College, em Hollywood, para estudar música. Tem sido uma incrível jornada até agora...
CE: Como é que a tua aventura eurovisiva começou?
Christabelle: A Eurovisão é muito importante em Malta, a maioria das pessoas está à frente da televisão nessa noite para assistir ao evento. Como artista, esta é uma grande oportunidade para eu poder mostrar a minha música e a minha mensagem através dela. Bem, na verdade, esta foi a minha quarta tentativa. A primeira vez foi em 2014 com "Lovetricity", que fiquei oitavo lugar. Depois, participei novamente em 2015, com "Rush", e 2016, com 'Kingdom', ficando em segundo e em terceiro lugares respetivamente.
CE: Como te sentiste quando soubeste que ias à Eurovisão depois de tantas tentativas?
Christabelle: Inacreditável! Eu acho que, tal como todos os outros concorrentes, eu entrei com o objetivo de vencer - mas nunca se sabe até ao último momento. Agora estou cheia de energia para trabalhar para a semifinal, e agradeço todos os dias por ser capaz de fazer tudo isto.
CE: De todas as submissões feitas, "Taboo" é a tua favorita?
Christabelle: Sim, definitivamente! Esta música é o clímax de tudo aquilo que experimentei e aprendi como artista durante estes últimos anos. E, com a ajuda do diretor artístico Steven Levi Vella, tornou-se numa música visual de que tenho muito orgulho.

CE: Além de "Taboo", qual é que considerarias, das submissões que fizeste, que tinha possibilidades na Eurovisão? E porquê?
Christabelle: Possivelmente "Rush", porque é uma música cativante e animada! Eu, hoje em dia, gosto imenso de cantá-la e penso que iria representá-la bem na Eurovisão. No entanto, após quatro anos volvidos, talvez precisasse de ser polida para se ajustar às músicas que se fazem hoje em dia.
CE: Qual é a história por detrás da música "Taboo" e como a mesma nasceu?
Christabelle: É uma música muito pessoal para mim, pois incide no facto de podermos acabar com os tabus que impedem as pessoas de discutir ideias sobre saúde mental. Eu sei o quão difícil se pode tornar o facto de não admitirmos a quem mais gostamos de que realmente não estamos bem. Esta ideia foi discutida com os outros três compositores (Johnny Sanchez, Thomas G:Son e Muxu) e "Taboo" nasceu!
CE: Costumas ver a Eurovisão? O que achas sobre o concurso? Tens alguma música favorita?
Christabelle: Todos os anos! É um evento bastante familiar, ficamos à frente da televisão e passamos a noite a discutir as músicas, as performances, o que os concorrentes estão a vestir e todo o lote de músicas que passam por lá. Adoro o concurso e penso que é maravilhoso ver tantos países juntos para comemorar a música desta forma. Para os artistas, a Eurovisão é uma ótima plataforma para promover as suas carreiras e as suas mensagens. O que mais posso pedir?
CE: Estás a preparar alguma surpresa para a tua atuação em maio?
Christabelle: Se eu disser, não será surpresa! Mas, sim, talvez...
CE: Este ano a Eurovisão será realizada em Portugal. O que esperas do nosso país?
Christabelle: Eu estive em Lisboa recentemente e não vejo a hora de poder regressar para conhecer e visitar mais coisas do vosso país.
CE: Além de vencer a Eurovisão, qual é o teu maior sonho neste momento?
Christabelle: Queria que a mensagem da música fosse compreendida e que juntos possamos discutir mais sobre saúde mental. É muito importante que estejamos abertos e que nos sintamos confortáveis para falarmos sobre estes assuntos.
CE: E projetos para o futuro?
Christabelle: Em primeiro lugar, quero assumir o meu papel como Embaixadora da Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society on Mental Health. É importante apoiar a causa e eu já tenho muitas ideias de como posso fazer isso. Além disso, vou casar em outubro e quero planear o meu casamento ao pormenor.
CE: Queres desejar uma mensagem aos nossos leitores e aos fãs portugueses no geral?
Christabelle: Obrigada às pessoas maravilhosas de Alter do Chão, que foram muito hospitaleiras quando eu lá estive. Obrigada por tudo.

CE: How did your Eurovision adventure start?
Christabelle: Eurovision is a huge thing in Malta with most people tuning in on the big night. As an artist, this is a huge opportunity for me to get my music – and the message within it – out there… This was actually my fourth time trying it out, however. The first time was in 2014 with ‘Lovetricity’, which placed eighth. I then took part again in 2015 and 2016, with ‘Rush’ and ‘Kingdom’, respectively. ‘Rush’ placed second and ‘Kingdom’ placed third.
CE: How did you feel when you knew you would go to Eurovision after trying so many times?
Christabelle: Unbelievable! I think like all the other contestants taking part in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, I entered with the aim to win, but you never know until the last minute, you know? It’s now full-steam ahead working towards the semi-final, and I am grateful every day to be able to do all this!
CE: From all of your submissions to the contest, is “Taboo” your personal favourite? Why?
Christabelle: Yes, definitely! This song is the culmination of everything I’ve experienced and learnt as an artist over these past few years and, with the help of artistic director Steven Levi Vella, it became a visual song that I’m very proud of.
CE: Besides this year’s song, which of your past submissions would stand a strong chance to win the contest? Why?
Christabelle: I would have to say ‘Rush’, because it was a catchy and upbeat song! I still love performing it, and think it would do well in the contest! Having said that, it’s now four years old, so it would definitely need to be polished to bring it in line with today’s sound!
CE: What’s the story behind “Taboo” and how was the song born?
Christabelle: It’s a very personal one for me as it talks about breaking down the taboos that stop people from discussing mental health. As something I have experienced myself, I know how difficult it can be to speak up and tell those around you that you’re not well. This idea was discussed with the three other songwriters (Johnny Sanchez, Thomas G:son and Muxu) and ‘Taboo’ was born!
CE: Do you usually follow Eurovision? What do you think of the contest? Do you have any favourite songs?
Christabelle: Every single year! It’s quite a family event for us, too! We all huddle up in front of the TV with lots of snacks and drinks, and spend the night discussing the songs, the performances, what the contestants are wearing, and the whole lot. I love the actual show and think that it’s wonderful that so many countries come together to celebrate music like this. For artists, meanwhile, the Eurovision is a great platform for furthering their career and message. What more could you ask for?
CE: Can we expect any surprise from your performance?
Christabelle: If I tell you, it wouldn’t be a surprise! But, yes, maybe…
CE: This year the Eurovision will be held in the Lisbon. Are you looking forward to see the city?
Christabelle: I was in Lisbon for a very short while a few weeks ago and I’m quite bummed I didn’t get to see more of it, so I absolutely can’t wait to visit again!
CE: Besides winning Eurovision, what’s your biggest dream at the moment?
Christabelle: That the song’s message gets out and that we start discussing mental health even amongst ourselves. It’s so important that we are open about these things and that we feel comfortable telling those closest to us that we’re not feeling well emotionally and mentally
CE: Do you have any future projects coming?
Christabelle: First and foremost, to take on my role as Ambassador of (Malta’s) President’s Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society on Mental Health properly. I think this is a great opportunity to further the cause, and I already have many plans for it. Moreover, I’m getting married in October, so I’ll also be planning a wedding once I come back from Lisbon!

Christabelle is going to represent Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, with the song "Taboo". She accepted to answer some questions made by Crónicas de Eurofestivais, and now we bring them as an exclusive to you.
Christabelle: I’ve been singing since the age of three, and my first appearance on TV was at the age of four… So, quite a while ago! Over the years, I’ve done quite a few things ranging from taking part in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest to attending the Mount St. Mary’s College in Hollywood to study music. It’s been an amazing ride so far!
