[Entrevista] Sennek: "a música é intemporal, elegante e tem um lado melancólico com uma história forte"

Laura Grosenneken, conhecida artisticamente por Sennek, vai representar a Bélgica no Festival Eurovisão da Canção em Lisboa, com a música "A Matter of Time". A cantora aceitou responder a algumas perguntas feitas pelo Crónicas de Eurofestivais, que agora trazemos em exclusivo para vocês.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): Como começou o teu percurso na música?

Sennek: Primeiro queria ser pianista, mas não era muito talentosa. Então, comecei a cantar para continuar a tocar com a minha banda de rock da altura. Foi assim que tudo começou. 

CE: Quais as tuas maiores inspirações musicais?

Sennek: Eu gosto imenso de vozes femininas fortes, como Janis Joplin, Roisin Murphy, Bjork e Sia.

CE: Como é que a tua aventura eurovisiva começou?

Sennek: A emissora VRT pediu-me para representar a Bélgica na Eurovisão. Fiquei surpresa quando me questionaram sobre este assunto, mas também bastante lisonjeada. É muito emocionante esta participação: a Eurovisão, para um artista, significa aparecer num palco para toda a Europa... e eu estou, neste momento, a representar a Bélgica, por isso quero que todos se orgulhem da minha prestação.

CE: Qual é a história por detrás da música "A Matter of Time" e como a mesma nasceu?

Sennek: É uma história engraçada! Eu escrevi a música com a ajuda de Alex Callier, da banda belga Hooverphonic, e do produtor francês Maxime Tribeche. Num dia em que eu estava na casa do Alex, apercebi-me de que o seu vaso de vidro caiu e partiu-se. No dia seguinte, conseguimos o primeiro verso da música: "sometimes it feels like it’s meant to be broken" (às vezes parece que algo está destinado a ser partido). Para mim, a música é intemporal, elegante e tem um lado melancólico com uma história forte: é sobre a perceção que as coisas fugazes também podem ser belas.

CE: Como te sentes por representares a Bélgica na Eurovisão 2018?

Sennek: Quero deixar os belgas orgulhosos quando estiver em palco.

CE: Costumas ver a Eurovisão? O que achas sobre o concurso? Tens alguma música favorita?

Sennek: Os meus tios são grandes fãs da Eurovisão, por isso eu sempre assisti ao concurso com eles. Aliás, eles emprestavam-me as suas compilações e eu ficava bastante entusiasmada com tudo. Atualmente, não posso dizer que seja uma fã, mas vejo o espetáculo todos os anos. Eu adoro quando uma música me causa sensações e me transmite algo, como "1944" de Jamala.

CE: Estás a preparar alguma surpresa para a tua atuação em maio?

Sennek: Ainda estamos a trabalhar na atuação, por isso não posso dizer nada de definitivo por agora. Mas eu posso já dizer que eu não vou dançar - sou melhor cantora do que dançarina.

CE: Este ano a Eurovisão será realizada em Portugal. O que esperas do nosso país?

Sennek: Eu já visitei Lisboa duas vezes. A última vez foi para gravar o postcard para a Eurovisão. Mas que grande experiência e que grande cidade!

CE: Além de vencer a Eurovisão, qual é o teu maior sonho neste momento?

Sennek: Seria incrível gravar o meu próprio álbum...

CE: Nomeia 5 coisas de que gostes muito.

Sennek: Yoga, vinho tinto, gatos, roupas pretas e esparguete!

CE: E projetos para o futuro?

Sennek: Quando a Eurovisão acabar, vou-me concentrar novamente no meu projeto a solo e continuar a fazer música.

CE: Queres desejar uma mensagem aos nossos leitores e aos fãs portugueses no geral?

Sennek: Olá a todos, espero que gostem de "A Matter Of Time" tanto quanto eu! Obrigado pelo apoio e talvez nos possamos encontrar em Lisboa! Quando estive aí a gravar o postcard eu já adorei o vosso país, portanto estou desejosa de ir a Lisboa novamente em maio.

Laura Groesenneken, known artistically as Sennek, is going to represent Belgium in the Eurovision Song Contest in Lisbon, with the song "A Matter of Time". She accepted to answer some questions made by Crónicas de Eurofestivais, and now we bring them as an exclusive to you.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): How did your musical career began?

Sennek: I first wanted to be a piano player but I wasn’t very talented ;) so I started singing to be able to keep performing with my rock band. That’s how it all started.

CE: Who is your musical inspiration?

Sennek:  I love strong female voices: Janis Joplin,Roisin Murphy, Bjork, and Sia.

CE: How did your Eurovision adventure start?

Sennek: Our national broadcaster VRT asked me to represent Belgium this year. I was surprised when they asked me, but also very flattered. It’s very exciting: Eurovision means appearing on stage for all of Europe and I'm representing Belgium, so I want everyone to be proud of me.

CE: What’s the story behind the song "A Matter of Time"?

Sennek: That’s a funny story! I wrote the song together with Alex Callier from the Belgian band Hooverphonic and with the French producer Maxime Tribeche. When I was sitting in Alex’s home, ready for a writing session, his elegant glass tea pot fell and broke. The next day, we had our first line for the song: sometimes it feels like it’s meant to be broken. For me, the song is timeless and elegant and it has a melancholy side that tells a strong story: it’s about being able to see beauty in things that are fleeting. The tension of watching something precious slip away and finding the beauty and that. It makes you appreciate things more and you realize that there’s also great beauty in the little things that we have.

CE: How do you feel about representing Belgium in Eurovision 2018?

Sennek: It’s amazing of course. I want to make Belgium proud when I stand upon that stage in Lisbon.

CE: Do you usually follow Eurovision? What do you think of the contest? Do you have any favorite songs? 

Sennek: My two uncles are big fans of Eurovision so I always watched it with them, borrowed their compilation cd’s and I got my enthusiasm about the shows from them. I’m not a diehard fan myself but I do watch it every year. I love when a song can touch me and give me goosebumps, like 1944 from Jamala.

CE: Can we expect any surprise from your performance?

Sennek: We are still working on the act, so I cannot say anything definitive yet. But I can already tell that I won’t be dancing a lot, I’m a better singer than dancer ;)

CE: This year Eurovision will be held in the Lisbon. Are you looking forward to discover this city?

Sennek: Absolutely! I already traveled to Lisbon twice, the last time it was to record the postcard video for Eurovision. What a great experience, and what a great city.

CE: Besides winning Eurovision, what’s your biggest dream at the moment?

Sennek: Recording my own album would be amazing.

CE: Name 5 of your favourite things.

Sennek: Yoga, red wine, cats, black clothing and spaghetti!

CE: Do you have future projects coming?

Sennek: When the Eurovision adventure is over, I will be focusing again on my solo project and continue to make music.

CE: Do you want to say something to our readers and general Portuguese fans?

Sennek: Hello everyone, I hope that you will enjoy “A Matter Of Time” as much as I do! Thanks for the support, and maybe we’ll see each other in Lisbon! When I was in Portugal for the postcard video, I already loved it, so I am looking forward to travelling to Lisbon again and enjoying the beautiful city.
