[Entrevista] Rykka: "Quero realmente viver o momento e amar a loucura"

Rykka nasceu e cresceu no Canadá, mas o seu avô é suíço. Vive a sua vida entre Vancouver, no Canadá, e Zurique, na Suíça, e este ano vai representar a Suíça no Festival Eurovisão da Canção.

CE: Como começou a tua carreira musical?

Rykka: Comecei a cantar com o meu irmão e a minha irmã quando era bastante nova. A nossa mãe ensinou-nos a cantar. Quando tinha 16 anos consegui um emprego num restaurante chamado "Swiss Chalet". Quando recebi o meu primeiro salário comprei uma guitarra e comecei a escrever músicas. A minha mãe sempre me apoiou muito e sempre me levou a diferente locais onde pudesse actuar. Após terminar o liceu fui para a escola de música por cerca de três anos. Desde então mudei o meu estilo de música algumas vezes e até o meu nome de artista do meu nome verdadeiro, Christina Maria, para Rykka. Sou muito ambiciosa e vejo a mudança como uma parte importante da vida.

CE: Como começou a tua aventura eurovisiva?

Rykka: Passei o ano inteiro a trabalhar na nova música e pensei que seria uma aventura fantástica. Estava certa, resultou! 

CE: Como te sentiste quando soubeste que ias à Eurovisão?

Rykka: Sempre trabalhei para ver as coisas de forma positiva, mas na final suíça eu já não pensava em ganhar. Tinha passado um óptimo momento porque no backstage todos eram maravilhosos e eu sentia-me em família. Claro que significa muito para mim porque a Eurovisão conecta óptimas pessoas. É fantástico conhecer tantas pessoas maravilhosas que estão conectadas à Eurovisão de alguma maneira. Para além disso estou muito orgulhosa de representar a Suíça porque faz parte da minha ascendência e amo muito o país.

CE: Costumas seguir a Eurovisão?

Rykka: Porque cresci no Canadá só comecei a seguir a Eurovisão há alguns anos. Achei maravilhoso que tantas pessoas tenham crescido tendo tão especial conexão com a Eurovisão.

CE: Como descreves a tua música?

Rykka: A mensagem de "The Last Of Your Kind" é de que sempre nos levantamos por amor, acima de tudo. Levantar por nós mesmos, pelas pessoas e pelos outros que não se conseguem levantar por eles mesmos. Levantar por amor por vezes significa ir contra o próprio ego e realmente procurar para encontrar a verdade.

CE: Quais achas que vão ser os pontos fortes que vão diferenciar o teu tema?

Rykka: Tenho trabalhado bastante para fortalecer a base da minha voz. Voltar atrás ao que aprendi quando inicialmente comecei a cantar profissionalmente e realmente tornou tudo forte desde o início.

CE: Podemos esperar alguma surpresa da tua actuação?

Rykka: Claro que haverão surpresas! Estou a trabalhar num vestido com a LYN Lingerie, será uma colaboração. LYN x Rykka. Tenho tido encontros com a equipa da SRF, a televisão suíça, e trabalhado no estilo e modo e no que irá acontecer em palco com eles. Tem sido realmente um esforço de equipa e tem sido óptimo ter sido tão envolvida, adoro isso! 

Tanja Dankner, Nyssina e Brandy Butler cantarão comigo em Estocolmo. São óptimas cantoras e estou excitada por as ter a bordo.

CE: Quais as tuas expectativas para a participação na Eurovisão?

Rykka: Desejo para mim mesma que realmente abrace a experiência. Quero realmente viver o momento e amar a loucura. Também quero focar-me nas fantásticas pessoas que conhecer ao longo do caminho e manter aqueles que me apoiam por perto.

CE: Tens projectos futuros a caminho?

Rykka: Vou lançar a minha nova música e uma tour com a minha banda.

CE: Queres dizer alguma coisa aos nossos leitores e aos fãs portugueses em geral?

Rykka: Quero agradecer a todos pelo fantástico apoio! É um sonho partilhar esta louca experiência com todos vocês. Muito amor para todos!

Rykka was born and raised in Canada, but her grandfather is swiss. Live her life between Vancouver, in Canada, and Zurich, in Switzerland, and this year is going to represent Switzerland in the Eurovision Song Contest.

CE: How did your musical career began? 

Rykka: I started singing with my brother and sister when I was very young. Our mother taught us how to sing. When I was 16, I got a job at a restaurant called Swiss Chalet. When I got my first paycheque, I bought a guitar and started to write songs. My mom was really supportive and would always drive me to different open mics so I could perform. After I finished high school I went to music school for about 3 years. Since then I’ve changed my music style a few times, and even my artist name from my real name, Christina Maria, to Rykka. I’m very ambitious and I see change as an important part of life.

CE: How did your Eurovision adventure started?

Rykka: I had just spent all year working on my new record, and I thought it would be an amazing adventure. I was right, it worked! I have a lot of new music that is all ready to go.

CE: How did you feel when you knew would go to Eurovision?

Rykka: I always work to visualise positive things, but at the Swiss selection I wasn’t thinking about winning anymore. I was just having a great time because everyone backstage was so wonderful and it felt like family. Of course it means a lot to me because Eurovision connects so many great people. It’s so amazing to meet so many amazing people who are connected to Eurovision in some way. Also, I’m so proud to represent Switzerland because it’s really in my heritage and I love it here so much.

CE: Do you often follow Eurovision? 

Rykka: Because I grew up in Canada I’ve only been following the ESC for a few years now. I find it so amazing that so many people grew up with it and have such a special connection to the ESC. 

CE: How would you describe your Eurovision song?

The message of The Last Of Our Kind is to always stand up for love above all. Stand up for yourself and for people and other beings who can’t stand up for themselves. Standing up for love also sometimes means to go against your own ego and really search to find the truth. 

CE: What would be the strong points that are going to highlight your theme song?

Rykka: I’m working hard to extra-strengthen the basis of my voice. Going back to what I learned when I first started singing professionally and really making everything strong from the ground up. I’m also visualising a lot, as I do, to prepare mentally. 

CE: Can we expect any surprise from your performance?

Rykka: Of course there will be surprises! I’m working on a dress with LYN Lingerie, it will be a collaboration. LYN x RYKKA! I’ve had meetings with the team at the Swiss Television SRF and worked on the style and mood and what will happen on stage with them. It was really a team effort, and it was so great to be so involved, I love that stuff! 

Tanja Dankner, Nyssina and Brandy Butler will be singing with me in Stockholm. They’re all amazing singers and I’m so excited to have them on board. 

CE: What are your expectations for the participation on Eurovision?

Rykka: I wish for myself to really embrace to experience. I really want to live in the moment and love the craziness. I also want to focus on the amazing people that I meet along the way and hold those who support me close. 

CE: Do you have future projects coming?

Rykka: I’ll release my brand new record and tour with my band.

CE: Do you want to say something to our readers and general portuguese fans?

Rykka: I want to thank everyone for their amazing support! It’s such a dream to share this crazy experience with all of you. Sending love out to everyone!
