YOHIO – "HEARTBREAK HOTEL"

2º lugar no Melodifestivalen 2013

      O meu absoluto preferido das finais nacionais de 2013.

     Até acho estranho eu gostar tanto desta canção (que, como muitos dizem, é uma espécie de música rejeitada pelos Tokio Hotel, que eu tanto abominava), mas não consigo deixar de amar a canção e de me viciar no tema. 

     Digam o que disserem do YOHIO, o mais importante aqui é a canção com que competiu e o trabalho que desenvolveu em palco. O Melodifestivalen, e consequentemente o ESC, é um concurso de músicas e um espetáculo televisivo, portanto vamos esquecer o aspeto dos artistas, a sua beleza (ou falta dela), as orientações sexuais, entre tantos outros pormenores irrelevantes  Contudo, e por muito contraditório que seja, tenho noção de que todo o favoritismo atribuído a esta canção, e mesmo o facto de eu tanto gostar dela, depende unicamente da excentricidade da personagem e da forma de estar em palco.

     A canção é na sua base um rock/schlager inspirado no movimento Visual Kei, tipicamente japonês, que é aquilo que lhe confere toda a unicidade. Inicialmente não gostei muito de “Heartbreak Hotel”, passou-me um pouco ao lado, mas à medida que o tempo foi passando e melhores canções não apareciam no Melodifestivalen, esta proposta foi-se consolidando como a minha preferida.

     Foi o mais votado em todas as semifinais, algo ainda mais notável quando a sua eliminatória foi a que teve menos votos no total. Era o preferido de todos os sites mesmo sendo um perfeito desconhecido há seis meses. Foi completamente massacrado pelo júri, mas ganhou com grande margem o televoto. Acho assim possível terminar o meu comentário dizendo: YOHIO é um vencedor.

BIRGITTA HAUKDAL – "MEDAL ANDANNA"

       Uma das duas melhores canções da final nacional islandesa, e que merecia ter tido muito mais visibilidade. 

       Já gostava muito da Birgitta, e ainda mais da canção que ela levou à Eurovisão 2003 (uma das melhores da história do país). Fiquei, portanto, muito satisfeito por vê-la regressar com uma música muito boa este ano.

        “Meðal Andanna” é uma canção “made in Sweden”. Constata-se isso pela sonoridade da música e pela forma como foi construída até ao seu final. É uma balada lindíssima e muito forte, que beneficiou de uma atuação em palco fantástica. Como todos podem ver, o cenário do concurso era muito limitado em termos de espaço e não existiam com certeza muitos planos de realização possíveis.     Ainda assim, a equipa que trabalhou com a cantora preparou uma atuação com impacto e movimento, sabendo tirar partido do pouco disponível. 

      Fiquei a gostar ainda mais da música depois de ter visto a performance. Com um palco maior e mais recursos, a canção sairia grandemente beneficiada; seria, portanto, uma excelente escolha para a Eurovisão.

FALCO LUNEAU – "RISE ABOVE THE NIGHT"

3º lugar no Österreich rockt den Song Contest 2013

       Esta era a minha canção preferida da desapontante final austríaca, e mesmo assim reconheço que a música não é tão espetacular como era suposto. Ainda assim, “Rise Above The Night” é uma balada/rock atual e comercial, duas qualidades que assumem cada vez mais importância na Eurovisão.
     Talvez seja muito linear e esquecível, mas teriam sempre espaço de manobra para aperfeiçoar a canção (embora duvidasse de que tal fosse acontecer). A melodia é muito bonita e fica ainda melhor com a voz de Falco.
     Para ganhar o festival austríaco e para depois ter visibilidade suficiente na Eurovisão teriam de preparar uma atuação com muito mais impacto. De facto, a performance de Falco foi demasiado aborrecida e pouco energética. A sua imagem também não se adequava ao tema que estava a cantar (queria algo mais leve, mais urbano).
    Gosto imenso da música e oiço-a até bastantes vezes. Com os devidos melhoramentos, poderia chegar à final em Malmö (algo que, aliás, acredito que Natália vai conseguir fazer).

KATE HALL – "I'M NOT ALONE"

Finalista no Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2013

       Kate Hall levou ao palco do DMGP três minutos que apresentam e explicam, para o espetador mais desatento, a essência da atuação eurovisiva. Foi o mais cliché que alguma vez vi, mas fã que é fã deve adorar coisas destas. Eu adoro.
        Aquela manta que Kate depois despe, a plataforma com as escadas, que ela desce com a ajuda do bailarino, a ventoinha no máximo, coreografia sem nada de novo, o efeito com os braços, o fumo a invadir o palco, vários efeitos de luz. Até tivemos direito a pequeno percalço (vejam no minuto 02:41). Quantas vezes não vimos já isto? E quantas vezes não tornamos a adorar performances assim?
       Kate tem um vozeirão e uma presença em palco arrebatadora. A canção é forte, orelhuda e muito cativante, ideal para a Eurovisão. Com uma música ainda melhor, ao estilo Hungria 2011, e tendo em conta o aparelho vocal da cantora, era uma aposta certeira para a Eurovisão. Espero que a tornemos a ver em breve.
      Uma das melhores músicas da grande edição do DMGP que a televisão dinamarquesa nos ofereceu este ano.

ALCAZAR – "NOT A SINNER NOR A SAINT"

3º lugar no Melodifestivalen 2003

       Obrigado, Melodifestivalen 2013, por me trazerem novamente à presença esta maravilhosa canção dos Alcazar, de há dez anos… Na altura, o Melodifestivalen no seu formato atual dava os seus primeiros passos: os palcos não tinham LEDs, os cenários eram básicos mas funcionais, não havia confetis e ventoínhas, e muito menos balões! Conseguem imaginar assim a maior final nacional para a Eurovisão?
      Musicalmente falando, o concurso não perder as suas canções ritmadas e alegres, as batidas atuais e cativantes. “Not A Sinner Nor A Saint” hoje soa-nos como algo ultrapassado e foleiro, mas em 2003 seria uma canção bastante contemporânea. Ainda assim, consigo bater o pé ao som desta música e sentir-me impressionado com ela, ainda hoje.
    Para isso muito colabora a presença de palco dos Alcazar. Muito frescos e arrojados, as suas performances são sempre muito poderosas e impactantes. O estilo de roupa pretende chocar, sair fora dos padrões, algo que sempre tentaram seguir nas suas restantes participações. Lamento que se tenham separado sem terem chegado a viver a experiência da Eurovisão uma única vez.
    Não sei se esta canção é a melhor proposta deles para o Melodifestivalen, mas é certamente uma das que mais gosto.

YOHIO – "HEARTBREAK HOTEL"

       My absolute favorite of the 2013 national finals.
     Even I find strange I’m so fond of this song (which, as many say, can be seen as a kind of music rejected by Tokio Hotel, who I hugely disliked), but I can not help loving this song.
      Say what you want of YOHIO; the most important here is the song itself and the work he has done on stage. The Melodifestivalen, and consequently the ESC, is a music contest and a TV show, so we'll forget the artists’ look, their beauty (or lack of), sexual orientations, among many other irrelevant details. However, and it is very self-contradictory, I know that all the favoritism given to this song, and even the fact that I like it so much, depends merely on the eccentricity of the character and his way of being on stage.
      The song has a rock/schlager basis, inspired in the Visual Kei movement, typically Japanese, which is  what gives this the whole uniqueness. Initially I did not like "Heartbreak Hotel" that much, but as the semifinals were passing and better songs did not appear in Melodifestivalen, this entry merged as my favorite one.
      It received the biggest amount of votes in all semifinals, something even more remarkable when his heat was the one with fewer votes in total. It was the favorite of all sites even though he was a perfect stranger six months ago. It was completely butchered by the jury, but won the televoting with a large margin. Therefore I can finish my review by saying: YOHIO is a winner.

BIRGITTA HAUKDAL – "MEDAL ANDANNA"

    One of the two best songs in the Icelandic national final. It deserved to have had much more visibility than what it got.
       I was already fan of Birgitta, and even more of the song with which she entered Eurovision in 2003 (one of the best entries in Iceland’s history). I was therefore very delighted to see her in the participant list with a very good song.
     "Meðal Andanna" is a "made in Sweden" song. One sees that because of the way it sounds and the structure of the song until the end. It is a beautiful and very strong ballad, that benefited from a fantastic performance on stage. As everyone can see, the scenario for the show was very limited in terms of space and there were not certainly many possible camera shots. Still, Birgitta’s team prepared an impacting and active performance, full of lights.
     I like the song even more after have watched the performance. The song would greatly benefit from a bigger stage, and therefore it would be an excellent choice for Eurovision.

FALCO LUNEAU – "RISE ABOVE THE NIGHT"

3th place at Österreich rockt den Song Contest 2013

       This was my favorite song from the disappointing Austrian national final, yet I recognize this is not as great as it was supposed to be. Still, "Rise Above The Night" is a current and commercial rock ballad song, two qualities that are increasingly important in Eurovision.
     Maybe it's too linear and forgettable, but it could always be improved (although I doubted this would happen). The melody is very beautiful and it gets even better with Falco’s vocal.
      To win the Austrian festival and then have enough visibility in Eurovision, he should have prepared a much more impacting performance. In fact, the presentation was too dull and powerless. Falco showed little energy. His image also did not fit the style he was singing (I wanted something lighter, more urban).
      I really like music though and I listen to it very often. With a proper improvement, it could reach the final in Malmö (something, by the way, I think Natália is able to do too).

KATE HALL – "I'M NOT ALONE"

      Kate Hall brought to the stage of DMGP three minutes of explanation, to the most distracted viewer, of the essence of a Eurovision performance. It was the most cliché I've ever seen, but a true fan should love things like these. I love it!
      That blanket Kate dressed, the platform with the stairs, the fan at its maximum, a choreography with nothing new, the arms movement, the smoke invading the stage, many light effects. We even had a small, but funny, trouble (watch from 02:41). How many times have we seen it already? And how many times we loved this kind of performances?
       Kate has a booming voice and an amazing stage presence. The song is strong and incredibly catchy, ideal for Eurovision. With an even better song, something like Hungary 2011, and taking into account the singer's vocal power, it was a very bright choice for Eurovision. I hope to see her returning soon.
       One of the best songs of the great edition of the Danish television DMGP offered us this year.

ALCAZAR – "NOT A SINNER NOR A SAINT"

3rd place at Melodifestivalen 2003

       Thanks, Melodifestivalen 2013, for bringing me back this wonderful song, from ten years ago. At the time, Melodifestivalen in its current format was giving its first steps: the stage had no LEDs, designs were basic but functional, there were no confettis and wind machines, even no balloons! Can you imagine the largest national final for the Eurovision this way?
     Musically speaking, the contest did not lose its rhythmic and joyful songs. "Not A Sinner Nor A Saint" sounds us today as something outdated and tacky, but in 2003 it would have been a very contemporary song. Still, I can tap my foot to the sound of this entry and feel impressed with it today.
    For this I must say Alcazar’s stage presence is really important. Very fresh and daring, their performances are always very powerful. The style of clothing wanted to shock, to get out from patterns, something they always tried to follow in their subsequent participations. It’s sad they have ended the band without having done Eurovision.
       I don’t know if this is their best Melodifestivalen song, but it is certainly one of my favorites.
