[Entrevista] Minus One: "somos muito realistas sobre Alter Ego: é um pop-rock vulgar e catchy"

Os Minus One são uma banda cipriota formada em 2009 com cinco elementos: Francois Micheletto, Harrys Pari, Constantinos Amerikanos, Antonis Loizides e Chris J.  No ano passado tentaram representar o seu país na Eurovisão com a canção "Shine" mas acabaram no 3.º lugar da final nacional cipriota. Este ano foram selecionados internamente para representar o Chipre e irão cantar "Alter Ego" em Estocolmo.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): Quando e porque é que decidiram formar a banda? 

Minus One (MO): Os Minus One juntaram-se em 2009. Éramos todos amigos que tinham trabalhado juntos em vários projetos no passado. Aconteceu estarmos todos disponíveis ao mesmo tempo e por isso decidimos criar a banda.

CE: Seguem a Eurovisão regularmente? Qual a vossa música preferida de sempre?

MO: Não podemos dizer que somos propriamente eurofãs, mas temos seguido ao longo dos anos. Somos cinco por isso teríamos cinco respostas diferentes, mas todos concordaríamos com Wig Wam e "In My Dreams".

CE: Vocês participaram na final nacional cipriota no ano passado. Depois disso, alguma vez pensaram que podiam ser selecionados para representar o vosso país este ano?

MO: Tínhamos um feeling que eles ficaram interessados em nós desde o ano passado, mas continuámos com as nossas vidas. Em novembro perguntaram-nos se estávamos interessados e foi uma surpresa agradável.

CE: Como é que descrevem a vossa canção?

MO: Somos muito realistas sobre "Alter Ego". É um pop-rock vulgar e catchy. É exatamente o que queríamos. Não me interpretem mal, podíamos ter feito algo mais 'pesado', mas o resultado não seria o mesmo. A verdade é que adoramos este género de música e mesmo que seja mais vulgar, acreditamos que é bastante diferente de todas as outras canções deste ano.

CE: Podemos esperar surpresas da vossa parte? Têm alguma ideia de como será a vossa atuação?

MO: Ainda estamos à espera dos planos de palco e que as pessoas que estão a trabalhar nisso nos enviem a ideias finais por isso não sabemos ainda.

CE: A Eurovisão ainda é uma porta aberta para ajudar os cantores? Têm medo de ter um mau lugar?

MO: Não temos medo de nada. Já ganhámos à nossa maneira. Há imensas pessoas que gostam a música, é fantástico! Claro que gostaríamos de acabar num bom lugar, mas vimos muitos artistas ao longo dos anos que não ganharam e acabaram por ter grandes carreiras.

CE: Têm alguma música preferida de outro país este ano?

MO: Há muitas canções boas este ano, e entre nós os cinco é uma lista longa. É difícil dizer apenas uma.

CE: Qual a vossa opinião sobre a não participação de Portugal no ESC 2016? Lembram-se de alguma participação portuguesa?

MO: É triste que Portugal tenha decidido ficar de fora quando tem tanta história ao longo dos anos no ESC. Mesmo que Portugal nunca tenha ganho, enviou músicas boas no passado. Não nos podemos esquecer de 2011 com os cartazes como se estivessem numa manifestação. Também me lembro de gostar de 2007 e dançar com a minha namorada (Chris J).

CE: Têm planos novos para o futuro? 

MO: Estamos focados a 100% nos Minus One neste momento. Estamos atualmente em estúdio a gravar novas músicas.

CE: Podem deixar uma mensagem para os vossos fãs portugueses?

MO: Mais uma vez é triste o facto de não vermos Portugal em Estocolmo mas esperamos ir até aí em breve para alguns concertos, conhecer-vos e beber cerveja portuguesa juntos!!

Minus One are a cipriotic band formed in 2009. Francois Micheletto, Harrys Pari, Constantinos Amerikanos, Antonis Loizides e Chris J are the five elements of the band. Last year they tried to represent Cyprus in Eurovision with the song "Shine" but ended up in te 3rd place of the national final. This year they were selected to represent Cyprus and they'll sing "Alter Ego" in Stockholm.

Crónicas de Eurofestivais (CE): When and why did you decided to form the band?

Minus One (MO): Minus One came together in 2009. We were all friends that had worked together in various projects in the past. It happened that we were all available at the same time so we decided to create the band.

CE: Do you regularly follow Eurovision? Which one is your favourite Eurovision song of all time?

MO: We can't say that we are exactly Eurofans but we have been following it throughout the years. There are five of us so you would probably get five different answers, but we would all agree on Wig Wam with "In My Dreams".

CE: You’ve participated in the cipriotic National Final last year. After that have you ever think you could be selected to represente your country this year?

MO: We had a feeling they were interested in us from last year but we just went on with our lives. Around November they asked us if we were interested so it was a very pleasant surprise!

CE: How would you describe your Eurovision song?

MO: We are very realistic about Alter Ego. It is a mainstream catchy pop-rock song. That's exactly what we wanted. Don't get me wrong, we could have gone heavier but the results would not be the same. The truth is that we love this kind of music and although it is on the mainstream side of things, we still believe it is very different from other songs this year.

CE: Can we expect any surprises from you? Do you have any idea of how it is going to be your performance?

MO: We're still waiting for the stage plans and the people who are working on it to send us the final idea, so we don't really know at the moment.

CE: Is Eurovision still an open door to help the singers? Are you afraid to get a bad place in the contest?

MO: We're not afraid of anything actually. We've already won in our own way,So many people love the song, it's overwhelming! Of course we would like to end up in a good position but we have seen many artists throughout the years who haven't won and actually ended up having great careers.

CE: Do you have any favourite music from other country in the contest this year?

MO: There are so many good songs this year, and between the five of us it is a long list. It would be hard to point out just one.

CE: What is your opinion about the non-participation of Portugal in ESC 2016? Do you remember any Portuguese participation?

MO: It's sad that Portugal decided to pull out when they have so much history in the ESC throughout the years. Despite the fact that Portugal has never won there have been good songs in the past. Of course we cannot forget 2011 (cant remember the title) holding the signs like they were on strike. I also remember liking 2007, and dancing with my girlfriend to it (Chris J here).

CE: Do you have any new projects for the future?

MO: We are at the moment 100% focused on Minus One. We are currently in the studio recording new songs.

CE: Can you please leave a few words to your Portuguese fan?

MO: Once again it's sad we wont see Portugal in Stockholm but we're hoping to make it over there soon for a few shows, meet you all and have some Portuguese cerveja together!!
