DIANDRA – "COLLIDING INTO YOU"

3º lugar no Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2013

         A Finlândia teve uma final muito homogénea: nada de espetacular, nada de horrível. Havia propostas mais clássicas mas eu, sendo claramente um pop boy, só podia salientar a “Colliding Into You”.

        Não se trata de nenhuma obra prima, mas é uma canção que se ouve muito bem, é bastante comestível. Tinha o defeito de ser balada e de ter, consequentemente, de enfrentar imensa concorrência na Eurovisão, mas podiam sempre optar por torná-la mais rock e aí destacar-se-ia facilmente.

         Diandra canta muito bem e tem boa presença em palco, mas é legítimo ter estado à espera de mais por parte dela. Queria que a atuação tivesse sido mais explosiva; foi demasiado plana e morta. Aliás, a canção exigia mesmo alguns efeitos de luz ou de pirotecnia e nada disso foi feito.

           É uma canção tão menos irritante do que a que ganhou… e tornaria o ESC tão mais adulto…

ANTON EWALD – "BEGGING"

4º lugar no Melodifestivalen 2013

           Isto é que foi uma surpresa! Jamais pensei vir a gostar tanto desta canção, uma vez que não me senti nada atraído quando vi o excerto do ensaio. É um daqueles casos em que é a própria canção a entusiasmar-me, porque nem sabia da existência de Anton e já vimos atuações muito mais bombásticas no próprio Melodifestivalen.

       A canção de facto faz-me “begging for more”. Não traz nada de novo, é certo, mas é tão contagiante e viciante que rapidamente ficamos vidrados na música. Está muito bem composta, e pessoalmente acho que é a canção mais atual das 32 que concorreram ao festival. Um qualquer cantor norte-americano ou britânico não diria que não a uma canção assim.

          Depois de algumas experiências falhadas, é bom ver que o conhecido Fredrik Kempe voltou em força à competição. Um destes anos deverá novamente ganhar, e se continuar nesta linha não será nada difícil. Quem também deverá regressar, e já no próximo ano, é o jovem Anton. Mesmo sendo inexperiente e um completo desconhecido do grande público conseguiu ser 4º classificado na final, depois de excelentes votações na Andra Chansen. A cada atuação foi melhorando vocalmente e acho que chegaria a Malmö completamente capaz de fazer um bom trabalho.

ELECTRIC FENCE– "EMILIA"

2º lugar do Selecția Națională 2013

       Para ser feita justiça eu devia abrir uma nova iniciativa no Crónicas para a final nacional da Roménia, porque não há uma única música que seja pior do que a canção vencedora, e se a proposta mais horrível ganhou, posso dizer que, para as outras, “foi por pouco…”.
       Apaixonei-me por “Emilia” à primeira audição. Arrojada e fresca, a canção destacou-se das outras participantes por ser tão enérgica e viva. Mesmo ao vivo (excluindo obviamente aquele estranho acessório da cabeça) a banda esteve muito bem, com a realização a dar uma ajuda importantíssima (embora este género de filmagem me deixe literalmente mal disposto…). A vocalista da banda não fraquejou uma única vez, algo notável numa canção tão corrida como esta.
        Fico feliz por ter chegado ao 2º lugar da final. Ao mesmo tempo fico chocado por ver que quem vota no senhor que ganhou pode também ter o bom gosto de votar em algo assim… Espero que voltem uma terceira vez futuramente!

ANNSOFI – "I'M WITH YOU"

4º lugar no Melodi Grand Prix 2013

        Mesmo a quinhentos metros de distância se torna óbvio que só pode ser uma canção da Noruega e composta por Alexander Rybak. O som dos violinos é belíssimo e faz a diferença nesta balada tipicamente nórdica.
      Uma das melhores canções do MGP 2013 e que muito justamente chegou aos quatro superfinalistas, depois de se ter classificado apenas em 3º lugar na sua semifinal (não conhecemos o número de chamadas nem a diferença para o 4º classificado, mas é um resultado um pouco desapontante para a intérprete, concorrente de um programa de talentos, e o compositor, recordista de pontos na Eurovisão). Ainda bem que os noruegueses reconheceram o valor desta proposta.
     Annsofi é uma brilhante intérprete com uma voz encorpada e muito forte. Não desafinou e não perdeu o controlo da voz uma única vez. Espero voltar a vê-la em competição. Tem capacidades para interpretar uma balada poderosíssima, o que seria bom para a Noruega mudar um pouco de rumo.

NINA ZILLI – "PER SEMPRE"

      Foi só a pior decisão do ano passado, um verdadeiro crime cometido pelas pessoas que se ocupam da Eurovisão na RAI. Colocar de parte o “Per Sempre” foi o maior erro que podiam ter feito.
      Não quero com isto dizer que a canção que posteriormente foi ao ESC era má; aliás, gosto imenso de “L’amore è femmina”. Mas “Per Sempre” era daquelas canções que nos fariam ter orgulho em sermos fãs da Eurovisão. Provavelmente surgiria no meu top logo depois da Suécia.
    Não sei a RAI quer ou não ganhar o festival, mas as suas atitudes por vezes têm mostrado que participam por uma qualquer outra razão que não o desejo de vencer. Vamos ver o que nos reservam para este ano…
     Resumindo: Nina Zilli é uma artista brilhante, que merecia uma melhor canção para expor todo o seu talento no ESC, e “Per Sempre” é a obra prima que tornaria isso possível. Uma pena, Itália…

DIANDRA – "COLLIDING INTO YOU"

       Finland had a very homogeneous national final this year: nothing remarkable, nothing horrible. There were more classical song but since I’m clearly a pop boy, I could only emphasize "Colliding Into You."
       This is not a masterpiece, but it is a very pleasant song to listen to. It has the problem of being a ballad and would have therefore to face a heavy competition in Eurovision, but they could always turn it a bit rocker and then it would stand out easily.
       Diandra sings very well and has a good stage presence, but it is legit to have been waiting for more from her. I wanted the performance to be more explosive, it was too flat and dead. The song itself required some light effects or pyrotechnics and this was not made.
         It's a so much less annoying song than the winning one... and would make the ESC so more adult...

ANTON EWALD – "BEGGING"

4th place at Melodifestivalen 2013

        What a surprise it was! I never thought I'd like this song so much, since I didn’t fell in love with it when I saw the excerpt from the rehearsal. It is one of those cases when it is the song itself to excite me, because neither had I known Anton before nor it was the best performance we’ve ever seen in Melodifestivalen.
       The song makes me literally "begging for more". It doesn’t bring anything new, of course, but it's so catchy and addictive that we can’t stop listening to it. It is very well made, and I personally think it is the most current song from the 32 that competed in the festival. An American or British singer would not say “no” to a song like this.
        After some failed tries, it is good to see that the well-known Fredrik Kempe returned with strength to the competition. One of these years he will win again easily. Who I also expect to return, exactly in the next year, is the young Anton. Even inexperienced and being a strange to the public he finished 4th in the final after an amazing voting in Andra Chansen. Every performance from him was better vocally than the previous ones and I think he would be completely capable of doing a good job in Malmö.

       To be fair I should open a new opinion column here only for the Romanian national final, because none of the songs there was worse than the winning song…
       I fell in love with "Emilia" at the first listening. Innovative and fresh, the song stood out from the other participants for being so energetic and alive. Even in live (obviously excluding the strange head accessory) the band was very good, with the production team to give an important support (although this kind of shooting leave me literally in a bad mood...). The lead singer didn’t fail anytime, something remarkable in a song like this.
      I'm glad they have reached the 2nd place in the final. At the same time I am stunned to see that the same country who voted who voted for the winning man had also good taste to vote for something like this... I hope they come back a third time in the future!

ANNSOFI – "I'M WITH YOU"

4th place at Melodi Grand Prix 2013

       Even if we are five hundred meters away, it is obvious that this song can only come from Norway and specifically from Alexander Rybak. The sound of violins is really beautiful and makes a great difference in this typical Nordic ballad.
      It is one of the best songs from MGP 2013. Thankfully it went to the four super finalists, which is a great feat, especially after having ranked only 3rd place in the semifinal (a bit disappointing result, considering the performer, a local talent show contestant, and the composer, a point recorder in Eurovision).
     Annsofi is a brilliant performer with a strong and full-bodied voice. She was always on tune and with a huge control of her singing. I hope to see her returning to the competition; she can come with a powerful ballad, which would be good for Norway to change its usual course in the contest.

NINA ZILLI – "PER SEMPRE"

       It was just last year’s worst decision, a real crime committed by RAI’s board people. Putting aside "Per Sempre" was the biggest mistake they could have made.
     I’m not saying though that the song who was later in the ESC was bad; in fact, I like "L'amore è femmina" a lot. However, "Per Sempre" is one of those songs that make us proud to be Eurovision fans. It would probably be second in my personal ranking right after Sweden.
       I don’t know if RAI wants or not to win the festival, but their attitudes in the past years have shown that they must participate for another reason than the desire to win. Let's see what we will get for this year...
      As a conclusion: Nina Zilli is a brilliant artist who deserved a better song to expose in ESC all the talent she possesses. "Per Sempre" is a masterpiece that would make that possible. What a disappointment, Italy...
