SIMONE – "STAY AWAKE"

3º lugar no Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2013

       Confesso que inicialmente fiquei espantado com a tão positiva receção que esta música teve pelos fãs, baseada unicamente no excerto. Com a disponibilização das canções por inteiro, também eu me rendi definitivamente. 

      A canção tem assim uns altos e baixos no ritmo, um pouco estranhos para quem ouve pela primeira vez (partes mais calmas, depois outras com os tambores a irromper em força), mas no geral, e a partir da segunda audição, é uma canção cheia de vida, que nos dá logo vontade de pular da cadeira e começar a dançar. O refrão tem uma construção muito forte e a repetição do título ajuda a fixar o tema. 

    Em relação à performance, não se podia ter pedido mais: houve dança, uma prestação vocal de meter inveja a muitos, imensa sensualidade e nenhum exagero. Merecia certamente o 2º lugar e seria igualmente uma digna representante da Dinamarca.

KEVIN BORG – "NEEDING YOU"

2º lugar no Malta Eurosong 2013

     Enchi-me de coragem para enfrentar galas com mais de quatro horas, com músicas maioritariamente asquerosas, apresentadores de bradar aos céus, intervalos publicitários a cada dez minutos, tudo isto estando convencido de que a decisão final iria compensar todo o tempo perdido com o Malta Eurosong. Não. Não valeu a pena. 

     Não ganhou o Kevin, não ganhou a única canção capaz de levar Malta ao top 10 oito anos depois. “Needing You” é daquelas músicas que têm o poder de ser fortíssimas e arrebatadoras, mesmo sendo simples. A melodia é lindíssima, há uma enorme harmonia entre o instrumental e a voz doce, mas firme, de Kevin, e a atuação foi competente e mais do que suficiente para vender a canção. A letra diz muito mesmo com tão pouco, e toca-me imenso. 

     Enfim, o júri não quis. Em maio veremos se fizeram bem.

SWEDISH HOUSE WIVES – "On Top Of The World"

6º lugar na 2ª semifinal do Melodifestivalen 2013

      COMO? Como? Há certas coisas que não sou mesmo capaz de entender. Porque razão ficaram estas maravilhosas donas de casa em 6º lugar na semifinal? A música é o pop sueco no seu estado puro, ainda que com toques mais modernos, e é interpretada por três divas do cenário musical sueco. 

       Cativa imenso, fica na cabeça, chegamos ao segundo refrão e já sabemos como cantá-la, pelo que não entendo mesmo esta eliminação. É obviamente melhor do que a lixeira do bananeiro e faria todo o sentido estar na final em representação do estilo mais identificativo da Suécia. 

       Sendo que a grande maioria dos fãs de todos os cantos do mundo adora este estilo musical, ia ser um sucesso enorme ter “On Top Of The World” a representar a Suécia na sua própria casa. Mas pronto, se a música não vai bombar na Eurovisão, bomba certamente na minha casa. Louvado sejas, Melodifestivalen, por nos trazeres ainda docinhos destes!

CHIARA DUBEY – "Bella Sera"

5º lugar no Die grosse Entscheidungs Show 2013

       “Bella Sera” não é definitivamente uma canção eurovisiva. Aliás, a grande maioria das pessoas não aguentaria os três minutos sem começar a ajeitar a almofada. A canção é muito bonita, mas indo à Eurovisão estaria apenas voltada a uma pequena parte dos espetadores – conseguindo, contudo, ter grande parte dos júris do seu lado. 

     A língua italiana é muito bonita e inspiradora, e aliada a uma voz como a de Chiara, deixa-nos completamente seduzidos. A canção envolve-nos pela sua harmonia, pelo seu sossego. Há até uma certa melancolia na forma como é interpretada. 

       Era das melhores canções da final nacional e seria, para mim, uma aposta mais convincente do que a do Exército que não vai Salvar a Suíça.

DANNY SAUCEDO – "Amazing"

2º lugar no Melodifestivalen 2012

      Pode ser um contrassenso incluir “Amazing” numa rubrica que no fundo aborda as injustiças cometidas nas finais nacionais, especialmente pelo facto de que não considero o seu 2º lugar no Melodifestivalen algo descabido. De facto, em 2012, tanto me satisfazia se ganhasse a Loreen ou o Danny, pelo que a vitória de qualquer um nunca seria visto por mim como algo iníquo. Ainda assim, Danny Saucedo merece estar na estreia desta iniciativa. 

        Tem boa voz, tem uma excelente presença, uma imagem muito bem trabalhada, e apresentou-se no festival sueco com uma canção nada menos que bombástica. Podia perfeitamente ter sido produzida pelos Swedish House Mafia (não confundir com as donas de casa, ok?) que ninguém ia estranhar. Acho a música muito vibrante e viciante.
      A atuação em palco (vamos esquecer aquela desastrosa prestação vocal na semifinal) foi muito bem conseguida e na final decorreu sem qualquer falha.
      Pensando assim por alto, é bem capaz de ser a música que mais vezes ouvi, dentro do universo eurovisivo. Um ano depois e ainda não me cansei. Amazing. Espero sinceramente que o rapaz tenha um dia o seu momento de brilhar. Ninguém pode perder para sempre.

SIMONE – "STAY AWAKE"

3rd place at Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2013

      I must confess that initially I was surprised with the so positive reaction this song had from the eurofans, based exclusively on the snippet. When the entire song came out, I fell in love definitely too.    
      The song itself has some ups and downs in its rhythm, somehow strange for those who listen to it for the first time (some calm parts and then moments with the drums sounding strong), but in general, with a second audition, you find the song full of life, that gives us the wish to jump from our chair and start dancing. The chorus is very strong and the title’s repetition helps in getting the song stuck to your head.
      As regards to the live performance, one could not demand for more: there was a dance routine, an excellent vocal performance, lots of sensuality, everything in a very simple way. It certainly deserved the 2nd place and it would be also a very worthy entry from Denmark.

KEVIN BORG – "NEEDING YOU"

2nd place at Malta Eurosong 2013

       I took courage to face these four-hour shows, full of terrible songs, even worst presenters and commercial breaks each ten minutes, just because I was convinced that the final decision would compensate all the time spent with Malta Eurosong. But no. It was not worthwhile. 

       Kevin didn’t win, and thus, the only song capable of getting into the top 10 for Malta, eight years later, didn’t win. “Needing You” is one of those songs that have the power of being really strong and breathtaking, even being simple. This song’s melody is very beautiful, there’s a great harmony between the instrumental and his sweet but solid voice, and the live performance was competent, more than enough to sell the song. The lyrics tell us something, and personally it touches me. 

       Oh well, the jury didn’t want him. Next May we’ll see if they did it correctly.

SWEDISH HOUSE WIVES – "On Top Of The World"

6th place on the 2nd semifinal of Melodifestivalen 2013

        HOW? How? There are some things I’m definitely not capable of understand. For what reason did these wonderful house wives finished 6th on the semifinal? The song is the Swedish pop in its more pure form, even though with more modern touches, and it’s sung by three divas from the Swedish musical scenario. 

       It’s really catchy; it sticks in your head in such a way that when the second chorus comes in you already know how to sing it. For these reasons I just can’t understand this elimination. It’s obviously better than that piece of junk from the banana-guy and it would make all sense to be in the final, representing the most iconic music style in Sweden. 

      Since the great majority of the fans from all over the world love this genre, it would be a huge success having “On Top Of The World” as the Swedish entry in its home. But well, if the song is not going to rock in the Eurovision, it will rock in my house. Melodifestivalen be praised for still bringing us little gifts like this!

CHIARA DUBEY – "Bella Sera"

       “Bella Sera” is definitely not a Eurovision-ish song. Moreover, the great majority of the people wouldn’t stand pacifically the three minutes without starting to look for a pillow. The song itself is beautiful, but if it was going to the ESC, it would be only directed to a small portion of the spectators – although it would get the support from the juries. 

       The Italian is a really beautiful and inspiring language, and together with a voice such as that of Chiara, we become completely seduced. The song wraps us because of its harmony and peace. There is also a kind of melancholy because of Chiara’s way of singing. 

       It was one of the best songs in the Swiss national selection, and it would be a more convincing entry than that from the Army that won’t make any kind of Salvation for Switzerland.

DANNY SAUCEDO – "Amazing"

2nd place at Melodifestivalen 2012

       It may be nonsense to include “Amazing” in an initiative about the injustices we all see in the national finals, especially because I don’t consider the 2nd place achieved by this song as something unbecoming. Actually, in 2012, I would be satisfied with either Loreen’s or Danny’s victory, so any result would never be seen as something unfair. Nevertheless, Danny Saucedo deserves to shine in this edition.
       He has a really good voice, an excellent stage presence, a very good appearance, and he entered the Swedish competition with a song no less than astonishing. It could perfectly have been produced by Swedish House Mafia (please, don’t make confusion with the house wives, ok?) and nobody would find it strange. I find the music very catchy and vicious.
      The stage performance (and let us forget about that catastrophic semifinal’s vocal performance) was really well done and in the final night it went flawless.
      Thinking about it, this song is probably the one to which I listened more, inside the Eurovision world. A year later and I still didn’t get tired of it. Amazing. I sincerely hope he will have, one day, his moment to shine. No one is set to always lose.
